Lol. Ime confusing myself now right, the connector out and gauge went up ime sure it was the green wire with red connector the white wire didn't do out( loom end ) the white wire has a black connector and should go to top as you stated , but the green wire with the red connectors goes to the bottom ( and I think it was this one that when I earthed out loom side gauge went up ??

Whoop whoop yes it does buddy , tho I also need to get it out and can't see how a socket or spanner will fit in gap , and I need to work out what the top one is if the bottom is the sender to gauge , thanks again for your help buzzing to be getting somewhere now

You said before that the WHITE wire grounded sent the gauge up. Confused. I can only tell you how mine is, White bulkhead wire connects to the top sender, Black, (thick green sleeve), goes to the bottom, marked on the drawing as 'switch'.

Tootles did any of your switch / senders have a red cover over them , looks like it in your pic , my bottom one had red rubber cover over it but top one didn't , wonder if it vibrated off after wire broke

One did, think it was the bottom one. That bottom 'switch' is strange. It has a shroud over it's end contact, plus a boot on the cable, which makes me suspect that it might be a live connection. If so, there will be a fuse controlling it inside the fuse box, which is inside the glove box.

Tootles , got home from work and gave the loom connection a real good clean with a nail and wd40 and wet n dry , right the white wire on loom when earthed out does my temp warning lite , the black wire on my loom side does the temp gauge when grounded

And good news I think , I removed the plastic belt cover screws and slid the cover over slightly , this enables me to get an open ended 22 mm spanner on the top switch / sender , I have managed to crack it so it's not tight now , when new parts arrive I will swap both and hopefully with top one out I can get to bottom one also , keep you updated buddy

Looking at them, I would say that the RED one is the thermostat, (it has the typical stat protrusion in the base), and the BLACK one is a switch.

Type 'eper' to Google. That puts you through to the trade parts finder for Fiat. Go to 'spares', and type in your vin number. That opens a box containing your complete vehicle details. From there, you can select any parts on your engine, part numbers, and location.
Very handy bit of kit. :thumb:

Give me a shout if you get stuck.

Thank you so very much Mr Tootles for this fantastic information for Fiat onwers.

I know a gorgeous French lady who is going to be very happy to know about the Fiat Forum.

Do we have to tell her about your involvement though... okay if I just tell her I knew about it on my own?

Be my guest, Mr JJ. I don't require the adulation at this time, however, I may ask you to reciprocate the favour at a future date?? ;);)

@Tootles I know this is bringing back an old thread BUT I have the same issue .. which one was for the sender again top or bottom?
My issue seems to be that the wires ARE connected and the units are as nunny said with black on top and the red one with the rubber boot) on the bottom... (what is this one for?)
Is there an earth behind the clocks in the dash ? and how can I identify it?

Many thanks for any info in advance

@bhs u have the same issue?

I have also been told it could be an earth behind the actual gauge, so going to take out the dash tonight and have a look see...
Will report back...

Ok, I have the following pics.. if anyone can hopefully identify the bits....

From what I have read in this thread this could be the coolant temperature sensor wire (white and green) it goes to the second sensor see pic below..

Is that just a bullet connector and can i just prise it apart?

20150728_131408.jpg

As you can see the second sensor has a boot over it.. and can only just touch it with my finger ends, I think as per thread this is the "RED" one - could someone confirm that this is the right one for the engine temp gauge?

20150728_131452.jpg

This is it from another angle...

20150730_171021.jpg

The below is the plug? that goes into the dash for the temp gauge, I cant seem to figure out how to get it out to clean the points just in case its a bad earth, the only thing that seems to move is the red blade that just i gather release the wires from the plug itself...

I have noticed NONE of the backlit lighting is working so may have to look at that... could be the bulbs have gone but all of them?

Ok.. update to this... ITS WORKING!!!!

After removing the battery, unbolting the power steering oil bottle and unbolting the timing belt cover managed to get my fingers in to remove the boot covering the sender, turns out the wire wasn't even connected.. was a pain in the proverbial to actually get it back on with my sausage fingers but its there now... >PHEW<

Thanks to everyone who helped me with this!!!

Dash lights? - might tackle them toward the winter lol... need to enjoy the Hymer a bit now...
I replaced the "bathroom" console lights with LED ones b15's they are much brighter and take 8w (2w each) altogether rather than the 20w (5w each) they were drawing.

New outside porchlight added with same b15's LED bulbs nice n bright, need to source a replacement water tank screw cap as mines brittle and is falling to bits lol - will keep an eye out this summer for one..
