Hi,

Our beloved Renault Ambulance campervan has stumbled in to a bit of trouble.

After having some fuel injector issues fixed last week, I've been told the cylinder head has a leak and the engine will need rebuilding/reconditioning or replacing. I'm finding it super hard to locate a 1997 engine, everyone I've spoken to so far says the only option will be to have the engine reconditioned.

So, how do I go about finding a trustworthy rebuilder? I've had 3 quotes so far, all totally different (each is £1K+ higher than the other) and I have no way of telling which will be the most reliable.

If anyone here knows of a reputable rebuilder, or a reliable source for 2nd hand engines, please send me their way! We are in Bristol but happy to send the van around the UK to get it sorted asap.

It's a Renault Master T35, 2.5 Diesel, 1997 LWB.

Any help appreciated!

I appreciate the logistics but wouldn't a check around some French scrap yards yeald a possible second hand engine, just a thought!

In terms of the rebuild quotes I suspect you need to carefully compare the specifications, cheaper quotes may not include all the parts you need, whilst more expensive ones may be offering you more than you need. Do you know exactly what is wrong with the head, many problems can be repaired by a specialist, or a simple head replacement may do.

think you need a better diagnosis it might just be gaskets and valves seats what are the symptoms if its only the head you could probably get an exchange recon head

@seedubb The thing with engine reconditioning is that they will not be able to tell what all needs replaced / repaired untill the head has been removed , sure they can do a compression test etc. and sure they can allow for a re skim of the head , but what if its cracked, or what if there is damage to any of the pistons / crankshaft etc when they start stripping it all down , then the costs can start to get crazy.
If it was me i would try to get a 2nd hand engine with a warranty , buy thats me :)
Hope you get it fixed without costing an arm and a leg soon :)
