Since we bought our van, three and a half years ago, we have always used bio washing liquid in the cassette (Lidl or supermarket cheapie). When we are away the cassette is emptied and rinsed daily and primed with 1.5-2 caps full of liquid.
The cassette is given a more thorough rinse when we return from trips but, having just returned from 4 weeks away, I decided that a bench clean (cap & seal plus vent removed for cleaning and get into the "works" with bathroom wipes and an old toothbrush) was required.
The cassette was remarkably clean. No limescale and only a small amount of odourless "gunge" (obviously treated by the liquid) caught up in the nooks and crannies.
The job was finished off with a swill of bio liquid and hot water plus a rinse with cold water before I rubbed the seal with olive oil to keep it supple.
