Having identified the Autorail Scout as a potential first motorhome purchase - just wondered what problems Scout owners may have come across due to its length and weight if any.

2009 on should see you past the Fiat issues like the rain scuttle and water on engine and clutch shudder. That seemed to be more after they first came out in late 2006.
Damp ingress would have to be the main thing i would say look out for, this can be said about many vans.
It seems very 50/50 on Autotrails.
Even if buying off a dealer I would ask and expect to have an independent report done.
Nothing special sticks out... 2010 onwards tend to have the bigger locker doors at the rear and lowered floor so more space.

£40k could buy you a nice 2012 Apache 700 and lots left over for fuel.. :xwink:

Happy shopping....

Thanks for that tonka - like the apache 700 :xwink: but think the scout might suit our long term touring needs better but maybe proved wrong at some point in the future.

Recent main problem areas are on the offside wall behind drivers seat dinette or side seat areas depending on model of van..
@didleyhulz if your on Facebook there is an Autotrail owners group. Handy for specific Autotrail issues, tips and fixes etc..
Sometimes vans for sale as well...

One feature on the Scout over the 700 is that it's very slightly longer and so the side seats in rear lounge will let a short ass like me lie down :) But they cost an extra £10k at retail new price... Bigger fridge is good BUT then you use more gas.
The payload on my 700 is 730kg, that's higher than on a scout of a similar time..

Love the scout but hard to see where the extra cash is really spent...

ALSO,,,, I know your working to a budget but in 2012 they bought in a 10 year Ingress warranty. Something to think about.

It was a big problem then and I had that issue with my van. Make sure you get the dealer to sort out the judder before you commit to buy.

If you are thinking of using the dinette as 2 sleeping berths then they are not for adults. In hot weather it can get very warm overnight in the overcab bed, especially if you are the one at the front. Check, roof especially, for the condition of the top surface.

Can't advise on clutch, could be just getting used to it. If in doubt maybe do another test drive.

Had an Apache 700 , water ingress around the front lounge window and near side rear , all fixed under warranty, 2014 model though , once fixed no other issues, loved it, wanted to down size otherwise would probably still have it . Like a lot have said full damp check before you buy would be a very good idea.

Well that`s our 13th year & still loving it.
The Clutch Judder was noticeable whilst selecting Reverse, Auto Boxes didn't suffer from it, Fiat finally had a fix for the 2.3L engines, there was No fix for the 3Litre
Type "Andy Stothert Fiat Ducato Reverse Judder" into a search engine for details.

The problem only appeared when Fiat introduced the 6 speed gearbox.

This is an quote from a chap in 2009 who pursued Fiat about this issue.
"The point is that very many Ducato owners have had less than a satisfactory response from Fiat particularly the 3 litre owners where Fiat have point blank refused to acknowledge the existence of judder. On the other hand 2.3 owners have been offered a fix involving a lower reverse gear, stronger engine mounts and a tie bar but it is only available to those who ask"

I've just noticed this is an old thread but for the benefit of others, bought a new Scout in 2012. Loved the layout and loads of storage and payload but as I've said previously AT are masters of marketing what is an aspirational brand but we had water ingress problems every year the last so serious it had to go back to the factory for 6 weeks!.To be fair they never quibbled apart from when the seatbelt frayed after a year. They said wear and tear but 3000miles!.I'd never buy another though.Completely lost confidence in the brand and its not as if there ain't many other options.
