That time of year again when everyone is asking for advice on touring
We are going to go down the west coast of Spain, travel down & around Portugal & then up the East coast or maybe Central area of Spain back to Alicante where we have our house.
Anyone got any good suggestions of routes, places of interest in Portugal and of course good campsites to stop at.

Fatima in Portugal is nice and there is an Aire there just a few minutes from the Cathedral which is worth a visit.

We travelled right around Portugal last winter and enjoyed every minute, here are a few places that might be of interest. Firstly, if travelling from Seville in Spain towards Portugal one place we ought to mention is El Rocio, We turned left at junction 28 on the EO1 (A49), this place has been mentioned here quite recently.

From El Rocio we headed to Portugal but instead of taking the motorway we headed north through Spain and came into Portugal south of Badajoz at Mourao on the 256, and headed for the castle at Monsaraz where there is a lovely aire overlooking over 180 degree views of the lakes. You can take a walk from here into the castle (free access) which is really a village where you can buy fresh bread in the general store. We left there and headed south to Moura where the biggest solar farm in the World has been built. From there we went further south to Mina de Sao Domingo - a very nice aire by a small lake (the entrance is opposite the disused copper mine) - you can drive into the copper mine and have a wander around - no charge, worth a look.

Still heading south we ended up at an aire in Alcoutim - parked there for a few days - you are right on the border with Spain and Portugal - as there is an hour difference in each country it was amusing at first listening to the church clocks chime one hour apart. From here we headed across the Serra do Caldeirao towards Cachopo then south to Olhao on the coast.

If you venture north in Portugal, we also visited Fatima, again worth a visit which a previous poster mentioned, we headed north almost to the border and stayed on the harbour at Viana do Castelo before driving south again to Barcelos where they have a huge, and we mean HUGE, market for tourists and locals every Wednesday - something worth a second visit for us.

We travelled further inland to Braga and Chaves before getting to Braganca (you can fill your gas bottles here), then head south to Izeda through lovely mountainous roads. Plenty of places to wild camp including a few aires. We love the mountains and the villages you come across - this is the real Portugal not touristy at all.

Enjoy your travells.

hug the coast its great .use the cepsa mapamax map .we take as many of the little roads as possible . from fi foz etc there are forset roads turn left half way coming out of praia de tocha if going north .but use the white roads on the map. we are in truck conversions so a camper should be easy .all that coast .plus galecia .asturia and cantarbria are fantaSTIC . BELIEVE ME FAR BETTER THAN THE MED .you may want to move once you have seen it . ha ha .
as for gas look for bp garages . they usually have gpl pumps .but you will pass loads of main stations that will fill anything .

Still making mistakes! But they're not as costly.
When are you going? That is on our route and we will be going along that way toward the end of September. :thumb:

If you are going via the motorway you won't have any trouble at all. Some long slogs but nothing very steep.
