What do folks think about portable electric hot-plates?
Which is better, the infra-red or the solid metal type?

Well that`s our 13th year & still loving it.
We have the Kampa double hotplate paid around £27.00, works excellent as long as the pans aren`t too heavy bottomed, we like to cook outside whenever possible to save the smells inside the motorhome.

We bought an electric frying pan, very versatile, have cooked many different dishes in it. Might be worth thinking about.

We have a belling single potable induction hob which came complete with a pan suitable for stir frys, curries, chillies, casseroles, etc. I use it all the time if on hook up as it is really heat controllable and has a timer which I can set to simmer things and it turns itself off when done.

We bought an induction hob (£30? from Aldi/Lidl?) THEN had to buy a suitable pan (large casserole type, so could go in oven also). It's great for large gatherings (Xmas?) but a bit too unwieldy in the MH.

Then we bought a dual hotplate (solid) from Lidl for £20: works well with all of our pans and saves gas if we're on EHU, which we tend to be when the weather is that little bit cool.

Many thanks for all your replies, most useful,

BUT, the original question was what was considered to be better,
a solid electric hot plate or an infra-red one?

There are 5 main types of hotplates:
  • solid - cheapest and nowadays heat up very quickly and retain the heat so you can turn them off to save electric, easy to clean and they are quite robust so more forgiving especially if you are a bit ham-fisted with the pans!

  • ring (ie coiled) - similar to the above but not as easy to clean and not as common as they were

  • ceramic and halogen - very quick to heat up and controllable, as they have a glass surface they are easy to clean but they do scratch and can be chipped or broken a bit more easily than the first 2 types, they are also larger so not as easy to store

  • induction - similar to halogen in look/size/durability to the above ceramic/halogen ones, but as you need a certain type of pan to use on them, unless you're planning on getting new ones anyway, or already have suitable ones, then I'd forget this type for now
Personally I'd go for a single solid one and see how you get on with it. About £10 delivered in the UK, and £14 for a double.

I have the solid plate which is used when on EHU and which I really like. The down side is it takes a bit to warm up into the pan and temperature control isn't instant. Ideal for using outside of the van just as others have said.
