When we did the trip to Santander in 2014 our plan started out something like this, with the ferry arriving around lunchtime:

Day 1 - Travel 117 miles south, 2hr 2 min to campsite near Burgos

Camping Fuentes Blancas
(ACSI)
Ctra Fuentes Blancas Km 3 (Burgos)
Tel: (0034) 947 48 60 16

GPS: N 42º 20' 28" W 3º 29' 29"

Day 2: travel 180-200 miles south, 2hr 53 min to campsite at Aranjuez

Camping Int. Aranjuez
(ACSI - south of Madrid)
NIF 40431963X
Ctra. antigua Nacional IV, Km. 46,800
28300 - Aranjuez
Madrid (Spain)
Tel. +34 918911395
Fax +34 918920406

GPS: N 40º 02' 31,73" W 3º 35' 57,64"

Day 3: we travelled another 207 miles south-east, 3hr, 18 minutes to just inland on the northern Costa Blanca - and from then on we went more or less south down the coast, all the way round to the Algarve in Portugal, and finally back to Santander. From day 3 we were staying mostly on naturist sites, which will probably not be of any interest to you.

Oh, and I've just realised that if you are going in August the ACSI rates won't be available.

The two sites above worked very well to get us started and the second in Aranjuez was especially excellent - just look on Google images for pictures of the town - the Spanish Royal Family hang out there.

Have a great trip! (y)

Of course the above all depends whether you want to head for the Costas on the Mediterranean , or stay around the northern coast of Spain?

The north coast west of Santander is lovely. There is contrast between the seaside towns and dandy beaches and the inland Picos De Europa, green and lovely countryside.
We liked the site at the coastal town of San Vincent de la Barquera. You can see it in the google earth picture above on the square of land out towards the sea, nice town and lovely beaches.
We also liked it he long sandy beaches at Foz .

Inland we liked Potes. Nice site Camping la Viorna, with a pool. You can take a cable car ride up the mountain.
Might be less busy and the heat more manageable than the costas in August.

Another vote for the Cantabrian coast, a little further along from San Vicente at La Franca are 2 sites close to a superb beach

http://www.campinglashortensias.com/ which we have stayed at out of season in June

a little further from the beach is:

Convenient as a base for exploring the area but check the prices for the peak period, around €40 - €50 a night, Spain is not as cheap as France.

Hi, two years ago we stayed at the Camping International site in Aranjuez and loved it. But we were out of season so booking your pitch would be w good idea. The site is very handy for a all into Aranjuez which is a very interesting place.

Depending upon what time your ferry lands (and leaves on the way home) have a look at the Aire just outside Santander. We have used that twice. It is next to a zoo park and we loved that too. Being close to the ferry it means you don't have the extra worry of either driving a long distance when you dock, or the same before you embark.

We have also extended the journey south by taking in Granada after Aranjuez, but we found the experience of visiting the palace underwhelming, very costly and far too busy for us, which was a pity as it had been well-rcommended.

I'm sure you will have a memorable trip.

Yes, definitely visit the aire as I'm sure your kids would adore being so close to the elephants. I loved it and thought it was great to sit in the van with my cup of tea watching them.... We have also visited the area around San Vicente and Comilas several times and love it. It has Beautiful beaches and nice towns but you probably would need to book ahead in high season.
