I am off to the frozen north of Caledonia on Sunday, one of my stops will be Applecross !
I have been there before but have used the coastal route.
Have any funsters used the pass of the cattle route ? The sign at the bottom has always put me off, so tell me about it you brave adventurers !! :thanks: :ROFLMAO:

Hi Steve, Hope someone can come on and help you. I just wanted to post and say have a wonderful time BUT please remember you have just had an operation.... Look after yourself and don't overdo it and undo all the good that has been done. Take care. Hugs

Pass of the Cattle

I have been " over the top" many times in a lorry with no problems and last sunday took Penelopy Pitstop family over (in my car). you shouldn't have any problems, just don't try to rush it. Personally I think it is harder to come back over the top as your brakes can get rather hot. Make sure you have your camera ready and enjoy it

I did it last year but in a car. Very narrow road, but with lots of passing places. tight hairpin bends, so not sure I would do it in a motorhome. The view is worth it, but it depends on why you want to try it.

If you are after the view from the top I would suggest you take the coast road to Applecross and then up the cattle road FROM applecross to the summit. That part of the road is much better (straighter) and you can see oncoming traffic from several hundred yards and can prepare for it much easier. Then turn round and go back.

the other thing to watch out for is on the rise towards applecross you also get cyclists trying to do the climb, which seems like a great way to burn out your clutch if you get stuck behind one

lovely part of the country though

Hi Steve

Like you have often thought about doing the cattle road, but as of yet still not plucked up the courage, maybe this year.
Or there again maybe not.

Hi

We came down the pass a few years ago in our motorhome, a talbot highwayman,
we were a bit iffy about it, but the chap in charge of the campsite at applecross told us that large lorries went up and down the pass regularly with no problems. It was a wonderful experience to be above the clouds and yes there are hairpin bends near the bottom but we negotiated them without a problem.

Go and enjoy the experience ans then the rest of your holiday.:thumb:

Sounds idyllic....Don't go this fast though or you'll miss it....

The last time we experienced that was on the Brenner pass in Italy.

Magical and we stopped to see the Marmots and frozen lakes.

We have a few weeks booked next year.Hope to get there then. Scares the ++++ outta me the thought of taking a lorry or motorhome up there...

Hope it didn't put you off...Looks like a bit of a climb though with a lot of single-carriageway...

You have a great time.:thumb:
