Info is a few years old so might be worth double checking, maybe on campingcar-infos.com - basically the St Jean de Luz aire at the time was cramped and near a busy road, whereas the small aire at nearby Hendaye was a bit quieter.

Camp site is on the N10 (or whatever they number it as now) dead easy to find. It's called

we have been past a few times, looks like a layby from hell to be avoided

think there is even a railway on the other side

only positives I can see are convenience

no excess miles to find it :)

convenient for the town

edit - I am referring to the aire not the campsite

Stayed there a few times, not a thing wrong with it,
If the road noise annoys you ,you probably went to bed too early,
If the train noise annoys you ,you should have had another drink, and if you do not like to park between a busy main road and a railway line ,then why the f____, did you stop there in the first place?,it's a handy over night stop,in the middle of the town.

Laroulette, (43.370294, -1.686091) Regular stopover especially when waiting for the snow ploughs to reopen the A15 or N121 to Pamplona!. Lovely Family run site. The Aire In St Jean de Luz is normally full by 3pm (43.385232, -1.662913).

Larroiletta looks pretty good but it's a bit pricey for winter, €18 plus I have trailer extra €2 and that's without leccy! Not that I need it but still a bit cheeky . I have sent them an email but if that's the price then it looks like the noisy aire and earplugs

cant see you getting a trailer in there, not unless you take up the whole plot

No problem with trailer and car, no charge either! As said acsi price is 17 yoyos inc electric 5 amp. Quite busy as there is no snow for the skiers so they have descended here. Pitches big enough for my van (7.5 mtrs). Trailer and fiat panda to fit on just. Thanks all for the heads up I will be using this place again. Had a look at the aire and it wouldn't be for me but it's right in the town but with the railway line a few metres one side and the busy road the same the other side I probably wouldn't get a wink

I know it's a canny bit north of St Jean de Luz, but there's a great aire at Contis Plage, near to St Julian en Born. We stopped there on the way down and then drove right through to Zaragoza the next day, no problem.

St Jean de Luz aire is the last place on earth I would stay for the night! It is noisy and cramped, the main road is at one side, the railway line literally just over the fence behind the MHs, it is cramped and even for a smallish MH can be difficult to manoeuvre in/out of and it isn't cheap either - it used to be free, but now you have to pay just to stop for an hour or two to visit the town. The water etc is charged for too. Much nicer places to stop than there ... I'll have to get the map out and check where we stopped.

Also Aire at Mimizan Plage. But that is further North (80miles) and off the beaten track. so the economics might not be as great?

Edit.

To be fair, even a CC or CCC site with similar facilities would be £20ish, and some CS CL`s especially in the South East will charge £15+. And a site should be more secure?. Also, There was a tendency back in the "naughties" for the "Aire" to be at least partially shut down in winter, we found several and camped outside the barrier more than once in January. Not bad if like us you had an on-board genny, and full "Vanbitz" security. But?.

You could 'Do' another hour, depending on your timing and get to Pamplona. There's an Aire there that's bound to be quieter than St. Jean

Couple of thing to be aware of here. First Pamplona is in my experience more than 1 hour. and second, having done it following a snow plough!, in January your 1 hour can be trippled or the road even closed. I found, again by experience, that it was best to start the Pyrenees crossing with plenty of "daylight" in hand. Sat in a Mountain Service area in the dark does not impress SWMBO!!.

I should have added that the Anglet aire (about 12 miles north of St Jean) is not only free until April but backs onto the beach. One of our favourites anyway. Also visible in Streetview.

In summer you have the La Barre aire just up the road as a backup. Streetview here.
