Ok. What do I need?

    Ive received a Woodforde's ale kit for Christmas :D . It makes 30 odd pints so what do I need to start me off? There's two cans and a sachet of yeast in the kit. Bottles no problem not sure about brewing buckets and stuff. Thanks.

    must be some instructions somewhere, my kits required a 40 pint vat for first 10 days fermentation then a pressurised barrel for the next 2 to 3 weeks. never bothered with bottling - too many accidents:xeek:

    So would basically a "food grade " bucket do to start with?
    According to the destructions I need a fermenter, pressure barrel (would I be able to decant from that instead of bottles and would the beer keep?)., a hydrometer and a beer stirrer. Any recommendations?

    You need a bucket with a lid as a minimum, in the early days they used small plastic dustbins but these days you can get food grade ones. If you don't have a home brew shop locally you will have to buy it on line. One with a tap can be convenient but the beer you draw off will be very cloudy. A bit of plastic tube is better as you can draw the beer off from the top where it will be clearer until you get near the bottom.

    You will also need some steriliser and if using glass beer bottles a crown corker and some tops of course.

    I suggest get a basic brewing book for beginners, I'm not sure which is best as the ones I had forty odd years ago are all out of print now! :xlaugh:

    You might be able to get a kit consisting of most of the stuff you need from a shop like Wilkinsons (Wilkos?) or last year The Original Factory Shop had them.

    The kits do make a decent brew I am told :) follow the instructions and you'll be fine.

    Think of the kit process as 2 stages

    Stage 1 fermenting

    You will need fermenting vessel (bucket with airlock in top about £10 from wilko's)

    Sterilising chemicals (about £2)
    Long plastic spoon (about £1)
    Syphon tube (about £1.50)

    Optional - hydrometer (for calculating strength of brew)

    Follow kit instructions using the gear above and leave for prescribed time. (Sterilise everything that touches brew)

    Stage 2 conditioning

    You can go for pressure barrel (about £20 - £50 depending on quality of barrel)

    Or bottles (£10 - £30 depending on quality)

    I use king kegs and wilko's "grolsh" type bottles

    Use syphon to transfer to barrels/bottles and prime using the required amount of sugar (remember sterilise everything and don't use your mouth to start syphon)

    20 days at 70 degs and your good to go!!

    You will get some sediment in barrels and bottles, so if using bottles remember to pour in one motion leaving sediment in bottle. If using barrel you may wish to look at a way of keeping pressure up (co2 injection) I have s30 valve and Hamilton Bard cylinder.

    You can obviously reuse all the equipment you have bought for further kits.
