Show plates are not street legal.. hey may look like a number plate but are missing the details of who issued them and that is a current requirment of the law ..even mu Isle of Man onr for class III scooter does not comply, but there is no requirement to have it shown.. just the disabled road tax disc.. we had it made for use in Europe where disabled scooters all have number plates.

But for the trailer etc., we have had to pay Halfords there expensive rates but they do carry the all important details along the bottom of the number plate..[HI] ÂŁ60 fine if not on the plate.[/HI]

Becomes a very expensive 'cheap' plate:Doh:

but did you read this ....

PLEASE NOTE: Buy clicking the buy it now you agree to the plates being made to the current regulations (100% road legal)
i.e Legal spacing, Suppliers Name and Postcode (in small writing at bottom of plate) and the BS mark.

Maybe so John, but doesnt the advert blurb mention giving details to legalise?
Details to someone on e bay?
Noooooo.

Dont think there's a difference, Roger.
Registration numbers must be displayed in the prescribed manner.
Geo or some other MOT provider would be best suited to answer this, but no doubt the "I've always......" brigade will be along soon.

Same requirements for a trailer Roger... they have to be the same as the front end.

The cheepo plates that I got have Suppliers Name and Postcode (in small writing at bottom of plate) and the BS mark.

I think that the statements gets the supplier out of the legal requirement to see documents ie if you send me your documents I will produce a Legal set of plates , If I dont see your documents then I will supply exactly the same plates but sold as show plates

Well, I'm puzzled,...

the LEGAL plate I bought from Halfords has NO name or dealer marking .. in fact, apart from the reg number there is nothing else on the plate .. .. just a tiny BS mark in the bottom right hand corner..

Can some one point to where is says that is a legal requirement ?

ScotJimland is correct. Google the subject, there are detailed instructions concerning the production and display of registration plates.

It might not be on the Gov web site but I know we have to put our name and postcode on the bottom of the plate as a reqistered supplier.

We are no longer allowed to put a web site address on the plates anymore. (we use a number plate holder with it on!)

Found this

Registration Number Plates

New checks have been introduced to the MOT Test to ensure the registration plate confirms to the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001.

These checks will now confirm the following:

The characters and background colour comply with regulations
The character font is an a correct type
The characters are the correct size as is the size of the margin
The plates are fitted vertically
The non-reflective border is within the permitted width
Finally an unacceptable symbol or flag, such as football team crests or logo, is not displayed.

Also for vehicles registered on or after 1 September 2001 ( i.e 51 plates and later ) the additional checks will also be performed:

It displays the BSAU 145d marking
It also displays the name and postcode of the registration plate supplier
It does not display a honeycomb or similar effect background.

If you renew a pre 51 plate it must confirm to the new regulations

So, are we saying that Halfords are making illegal plates ?

That's how I read the previous post .. should I email them for clarification ?

EDIT

I have emailed Halfords asking why their plates do not have a suppliers name and post code

More embarrassment for me ...:Blush:

Reply from Halfords

Dear James

I am genuinely surprised as the Halfords logo along with the other required details is automatically printed on the blanks before dispatch to store.

Can i ask that you return top your5 local store and allow the instore team to inspect the plates to confirm.

If this can be confirmed then we will be more than happy to replace the plates for you at no cost.

Please accept my sincerest apologies for any inconvenience caused to you as a result of this matter.

So, I brought the plate indoors, and looked again and still saw nothing, then I tilted it to the light and there it is ... a small Halfords logo .. almost invisible unless you tilt the plate, and it's only visible at a certain angle.. certainly not visible when you look straight on the plate ..

So I have replied to Andy and aplogised .. .

Top Marks to Halfords for customer service ..
