Last week we got a call from the caravan club travel service that our ferry from Hull to Zeebrugge for this weekend had been cancelled due to a technical fault. The only option available was to travel on the Monday night.I asked what if I cancel altogether then?Answer you will lose all your money as the cancellation is within 28 days of your trip.Do we get any sort of compensation i.e. Fee upgrade etc Answer No but we won't charge you the £20 amendment fee for altering your sailing date!!!!Then today they have rang me again to say the return sailing has now been cancelled. So will now have to take another days holiday from work.It has really took the shine off our trip and will think twice before using either North Sea ferries or the caravan club travel service again.

I think you'll find it is beyond the control of the C&MC, it's the ferry company's fault, and they do break down occasionally.

I was trying to make the point that they thought it was a gesture not to charge me for altering the crossing.BTW It has now happened 3 out of the last 4 crossings.

Bad but unfortunately convenient as they are 1.5 miles from home.

But by the sounds of it, it would be quicker to go via Dover in any event.
It would have been but I would have lost over £300 and it was no fault of mine

Certainly consider it next year.Already have North Sea ferries booked for July.Hopefully they have fixed the Pride of Brugge by then.

Thank you for the info.It certainly does seem the caravan club have either got it wrong or have given me duff information regarding the cancellation policy.

This might help but the legal niceties could be subtle. Is a technical fault an "extraordinary and unavoidable circumstance"? If it is then they don't have to pay compensation. Throw in it wasn't booked directly with the ferry company and it might be messy.
I had something similar with Brittany Ferries last year and they were very good I thought in re-arranging and compensating me for financial loss.

Thought both the boats on the Zeebrugge service had recently been in for an expensive refit, old boats though.

<Broken link removed>

Refit not up to much then, perhaps they never bothered with the important bits!

Sorry but that's the best link I can post its a booklet from the consumer council titled
"Delayed and Cancelled Ferry Services – Your Rights" it states:

If a service is expected to be cancelled or delayed for more than 90 minutes beyond its
scheduled departure time, the ferry operator is required to provide passengers with free
snacks, meals and refreshments where they are available or can reasonably be
supplied.
You should also be offered a choice between:
 An alternative sailing at the earliest opportunity; or
 A full refund which must be paid within seven days.
Let them know you have rights under Regulation (EU) No 117/2010

i think trying to keep your money, when the ferry company will offer a refund is not beyond there control

It's the ferry company who gets the money, the C&MC are only acting as agents.

not so newbie anymore - since 2016
But you are not cancelling the journey you booked.
You have the option to refuse the offer of an alternative sailing if the options are not reasonable or acceptable.

I expect you will find that the person you spoke to at the CMC was misinformed or inexperienced. It is worth ringing back and talking to a supervisor if you feel you would prefer a receive a full refund rather than amend your travel dates and take extra holiday to accommodate it.

as "agents" I'm sure they take a cut of your ticket money, and if you get a refund C&MC get nothing. personally i prefer to book direct rather than book through any broker/agent that just syphon off monies, having little or no benefit to either carrier or passenger
