We start our 6 week tour on 18th April and plan to go down our usual route to Spain. We usually go non toll via Rouen-Orleans-Montlucon-Clermont Ferrand and then the A75. I've always found it difficult to find a route bypassing Montlucon. I usually approach it using the D943 or D2144 and usually end up going through the town to exit onto the D2144 south. We could use the N145 to get around most of it but in order to get back onto the D2144 we still end up going part way into the town. Are there any easier routes or do I just stick to the route described. :cooler:

We have just come northwards from Clermont Ferrand to Orleans but came up via Moulins and Nevers and then the National Road (N7) via Gien to Orleans. Didn't pay any tolls that way
Incidentally we stayed on a lovely Aire by the Canal at Châtillon-sur-Loire at 47.592376, 2.758282 47°35'32.5"N 2°45'29.8"E

9 Euro's by card inc EHU & services

You could always try one of the many other routes to Spain. We do not travel on toll routes and find the variety of alternative roads adds to the pleasure of the unexpected Aires that are available.

We often go West to East through/past Montlucon on the N145, its 50/50 whether we go round or through as it is not a difficult town to navigate through...

But as suggested take a totally different route for a change, where about in Spain are you heading, we know many different routes...

This was last weekend at 8400 ft
