I am due to collect my motorhome from the dealer next Thursday and it is currently undergoing servicing etc.

However, I have just found out that they have lost the service book.

Details:-

Registered April 2007.
One owner until purchased by the dealer April 2009.
Mileage 22000.
The dealer has used it for travel to shows during 2009.
Van is in excellent condition inside and out.
Van drives great, lively 2.0L fiat JTD.
Engine bay clean and dry, engine has nice tick-over.

Question is, would you worry about the lack of service history, given that the first owner had it for 2 years and I think it probably had 12k on the clock when it was traded in to the dealer?

Contact 1st owner and ask where the service if any was done. Fiat service agent should have a record of work carried out. Get a replacement book and ask them to fill it in and stamp it. Problem solved.

Take two identical motorhomes for trade in, they ask the question "Full service history?"
You answer
1 Yes ok.....£££££££
2 No ok......£££££££ minus £££

As 656 has said, find dealer that did service or get a big discount for no book if you plan to keep for a long time.

IMO

Brought a Auto Trial 06 plate with service book---had 44000 miles on the clock(3 years old)---got a reduction of £4000---feel although this is a lot of mileage---it as a commercial Fiat van engine----had 2 vans that have done over 250000---providing the mileage he states is right(not clocked)---get him to discount the price!----Good luck---KENT MIKE::bigsmile:

I wouldn't worry about it because it is only documentation. It won't give any guarantee that the motorhome will be better in any way, but it might be worth putting pressure on the dealer to give a small reduction in price, or negotiate fitting extra's.

We didn't receive a lower trade in price for our previous motorhome, although it hadn't had the service book stamped since it's first free service.

I would want to be sure that it had not been 'clocked' i.e the mileometer turned back-more difficult now, but not impossible.

Mileage can be checked if the other records include the past MoTs, which will record the mileage at each test.

Also you might want to do an HPI, or equivalent, check.

This may give you reassurance, which is what you are looking for.

If you are still unsure, you have two alternatives:-

Negotiate a discount to cover any risk

Walk away - even if difficult when your heart is in it (but the salesman knows that ! )
