About to take the first step into camper life.
I would love to get away for weekends with the OH and our dog.
Inspiration needed and advice on what camper is likely to be suitable.
First thoughts are a Trafic or Transit diesel. Two berth with awning if poss. 240v hookup but also suitable for wild camper vanning.
Will have up to 5 grand to spend so any ideas gratefully received.
    Cheers,
    Nick P.

Hi and welcome. I'm a bit of a novice too, so don't feel qualified to advise about vehicles.

    Good luck and enjoy!:welc:

Hello Welcome to fun, in your budget you need to get the best base unit you can, check it thoroughly for damp, from there you can tweak it how you choose. Use the search engine on here fore information and ask as many specific questions as you want.

For Wild camping you could do with a solar panel on it so try and factor that into the cost, good luck great part of the world to explore from. :welc:

:welc: a great site with a lot of very experienced mhomers/campers who will help. Can't recommend anything other than back up what Carol says in #3.

    Hi Nick and welcome.

Sounds similar to us if its a 'Camper' you are after and not a 'Motorhome'.
I went for a 150,000 miler I got for next to nothing with a blown engine.
£1,000 engine parts to get it running
    £400 alloy wheels
£500 home made GRP pop top roof.
    £300 ply-lining/insulation/carpet
    £400 windows
    £500 Rock n Roll bed
£200 Oak ply and Oak stock for the manufacture of the kitchen
£150 Pair Galaxy Captains front seats inc home recover.
    £300 SMEV 9222 sink/hob/water tanks/pump
    £450 Compressor fridge
    £450 Propex heater
    £500 12v & 240v Electrics/wiring/battery/split charger/mains charger/inverter/12v LED lights

So around £6000 and that's doing it all myself over a year.

I have not gone for a solar panel, so rely on running the engine or mains, but even without either last 3 days OK being careful. A mate did have a solar panel at £800.

    Steve

    Hi and welcome
I bought a Renault Trafic 9 seater six months ago. I went away the first week sleeping on a rear benchseat. Over the months I have removed the seats and replaced the front benchseat arrangement with a pair of swivelling captain seats. I modified a futon to make a bedbase which is mounted on some some simple lockers I made from ply and covered with lining carpet. I have fitted carpet to the floor and rigged up some curtains. I have a small 3way chest fridge, use a Cadac or Cobb grill and carry water and washing up bowl, and all importantly I have a bucketloo ! There are plenty of other things I think it may be nice to have but I am impatient so am away on the road at every opportunity. Nothing beats parking up and sliding back that door to take in another new and exciting view. Don't get too wound up about getting all the fancy must haves. Be brave and take that first step, once you have a van you can start enjoying camper life, you'll learn as you go, it's all part of the fun. And yes camper life is great fun, especially the MotorhomeFun meets!!

Hi Nick. MY brother’s got his self build Iveco on ebay at the moment that’s in Cumbria, avoid it like the plague, unless you want to know what not to buy  It’s the camper van equivalent to a garden shed on a council allotment, doors and windows from here there and everywhere
