If you want to use Motorhomes then if you pick up in Auckland then you need to drop it off in Wellington then catch the ferry as foot passengers the arrange collection of another Motorhome in Picton. You can load you luggage at the ferry like at an airport and collect it the other side, might be cheaper this way. We go to NZ every 2 years to see 2 of our sons but we find it just as cheap to hire a small car and stay in B & Bs or lodges. We will be there from Boxing Day until the end of Jan.

W have used Maui before and found them quite good. You may find toward the end of the NZ summer a few bargains to go North rather than South as a
Lot of the rental fleets end up in Queenstown and need to get back north so a few relocation deals can be found.

last year we swapped our MH for five months November to april and toured extensively, excellent trip!,best holiday ever,
it worked out well for us but did mean we lost our MH from May to August this year, without doubt it's the cheapest solution and important to have a good dialogue and understanding of what's expected from both parties,
we were picked up and delivered back to the airport as we did the same for them, plus one night accommodation to get over jet lag and time to do a proper hand over,
it's not for everybody but it worked well for us,

we used these people when we went in 2012,they deal with quite a few companys,we went with a Britz van but if you want a newer one use Maui! We did both Islands and just booked the ferry on line when we were ready to cross, cost us £153 back then, about the same for a crossing tomorrow!.Free wi-fi in all libraries.

With 4 on board will be easier to keep same MH as a lot to transfer. Also maybe not cost effective in time as takes up nearly a day each pickup and drop off in our experience. Worth every penny, glad we were not in BnB as found wonderful places to pull over for coffee, lunch and overnight.

We're off on Monday for a couple of months, principally to be with our newly arrived granddaughter over Christmas/New Year. But first we have a tour of South Island roughed out to fill in the bits we missed last time. This time we have hired from Wilderness who have a range of Burstners imported from Europe. Previously, in NZ and OZ, we have had homegrown vehicles which have been ok but a bit workmanlike and clunky compared with European vans. The Wilderness fleet seems to be newish vehicles under 2 years old and, therefore maybe a bit pricier than some. Worth checking out, though. They have pickup in Christchurch and Auckland.
