Hi everyone
I've hired a motorhome for new years eve and i'm planning on taking it up to scotland, how far north do you think i will get in a motorhome due to the snow? and i'm also accompanied by an RV. Also do any of you know where we can stop for 2 nights as far north as possible, around inverness. I wanted to go Durness but just don't think thats realistic in the snow lol.

Any info will be gratefully received :)

On and off for many years.
Ask @DavidG58 :)

What's the worst that can happen? You end up stuck for a few days but you are self contained so does it matter?????

The main roads are never closed for very long, we are used to snow.

Unless it's a massive drop of snow I would think you could go just about anywhere you want, we don't grind to a standstill just for snow we just take a little longer or different roads.

eight years in theory, a newby in practice!!!
For 11 years I drove from Glasgow down to Manchester and back 5 nights a week and you'd be surprised how often it snowed during the night between October and May. It started as rain and every time you climbed to over 500ft it would turn from rain to snow then back to rain as you got lower again. The roads depts in Scotland are very good at gritting the road and rarely get caught out. The snow is normally gone by the morning. Saying that Scotland gets hit regularly by deep Atlantic low pressure systems which batter the country. The weather is so different to what we get here in Mid Wales. It can change very quickly at any time of year. Keeping in mind that almost 70% of Scotlands mainland is over 1,000ft. High ground can't be avoided in the Highlands. If you keep an eye on the weather forecast you should be Ok.
Enjoy your trip, wish I was going for Hogmanay(y)

If you go up the A9 it is really only Drumochter pass and the Schlocd pass that can give you issues and then the snow gates are usually closed. There would be less of a risk going up the East coast to Inverness as most of the route is at sea level but Aberdeenshire has suffered severe snow falls over the years. Going north from Inverness on the A9 is mostly around sea level give or take 200m with the exception of the drop down into Berriedale being very dangerous in the snow but again the snow gates would be closed if it was bad. Personally I would go and take it as it comes, no point worrying about what ifs. (y)

We spent last Hogmanay at Foyers on Loch Ness, no snow on the ground only high on the mountains. We live in Scotland and most years don't see any snow. Having said that got caught in a blizzard in April on the A9 once while in the van.

Durness should be ok unless there is massive cold snap with lots of snow.
I was there recently when temps in the glens were -10 and it was crisp but the best of the weather was to be had in Sango Sands.

Since 2015
2006 & 2010 were the last bad winter snowfalls; the rest have been a breeze in comparison. Easy to remember because my wife made us move back in to town after the 2006 winter and our flights to Amsterdam (heading to Singapore) just made it out of Aberdeen on the 22nd of December 2010. Have had over 10°C on Christmas day a couple of times since 2010. Enjoy :xThumb:
