Ford announced today the launch of a new lightweight Transit Motorhome Chassis, designed for specialist converters and offering enhanced payload and fuel efficiency to European customers.
The new Transit Motorhome chassis has a reinforced lightweight ladder frame with a low construction height, and comes with three different wheelbases - 3.3m (130 inch), 3.75m (148 inch) and 3.95m (156 inch).

The new chassis is available with the 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi turbo diesel engine, offering 115 PS (300 Nm) and 140 PS (350 Nm) power and torque levels, and a standard six-speed manual transmission. An electronic anti-lock braking system (ABS) is standard, and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Hill Launch Assist (HLA) are also available.

Transit," Steve Adams, Vehicle Line Director for Commercial Vehicles at Ford of Europe, said in a release.

The new Transit Motorhome Chassis features specially designed to allow the integration of a motorhome are detailed below:

The cabin cut-out preparation allows flexibility for attaching different body profiles.
The outboard camper handbrake positioned on the outward side of the driver seat provides unrestricted walkthrough access from the front seats.
The antenna mounting is moved from the roof to the mirror mounting to provide clearance for the overhead conversion.
A central electrical connector facilitates faster integration of additional electrical systems during the conversion process.
Auxiliary fuel tank connections are available for diesel powered devices such as diesel-powered heater systems.

Fiat have always been very accommodating toward the motorhome industry, collaborating with them and supplying what they want at a good price, This is why it seems 9 out of 10 motorhomes are Fiat. That Ford look like they are taking the market more seriously has got to be good for us end users, giving more choice and maybe even driving down price.

Can't remember ;)
I wonder if it is going to get good rust proofing and a good engine that does not eat starter motors and flywheels :Eeek:

Ford fuel consump...

We picked up our Dethleffs T63 on the weekend.....Over the first 500 miles the Tranny 140BHP averaged 30.7 MPG so I'm very pleased. Hopefully as the engine loosens it will creep closer to 35MPG!!

We have been driving a Swift Sundance 2.3 (Fiat) and all I can say is the ford leaves it standing. The torque is simply excellent, the gearbox is superb
and chassis handling is definately more "confidence inspiring".

I had to laugh we an MH dealer in the south told the Transit is agricultural compared to the Fiat!! One thing however I will get the bumper/ grill colour coded with cab as this gives a Fedex/ DHL image :)

Speak as you find......I maybe talking a lot of dros:thumb:

Sung to the tune: A Gordon for Me

Altogether now... :roflmto:

A Trannie for me, a Trannie for me,
If ye're no a Trannie ye're nay use to me.
The Fiat's are braw, the Renaults and a'
But the cocky wee Trannie's the pride o' them a'.

We have the 130BHP Trannie have about 17000 miles on ours easily average 35mpg on 6 week trips to Scotland, have done this a few times.

Glad you are finding you enjoy yours, this is our first time with a Trannie base up till now have always had Fiat or Renault but must say I have nothing but praise for it in all departments. Have now had for 2 years would I buy Ford again, so far a definite yes.

Having a VW T5 174bhp probably the best drive in this size of van. I did last weekend hire a new Transit van to move some bits. I must say that I was very impressed, as said earlier if Ford sort out the clutch starter motor problems then I would definitely consider one in the future. I would never say that about a fiat I’m afraid.

Clutches and starter motors?
Not on the latest model! I've done 85,000 miles in my work van, always fully loaded, with only a power steering pipe, an EGR valve and brake linings to keep it going!
Swayed our decision to buy our Transit-based Chausson.
Couldn't be happier!

God - come back mother all is forgiven. She used to get stuck on 'till all the seas gang dry ma dear ............." and I still miss her, 30 years on. I learned just about every wee Scottish song there was and she adored Kenneth MacKellar (although my dad called him old porridge face).
