Note to the people that don't know the facts. Fiat make a 130 hp and a 150 hp 2.3 engine and charge its customers £800 for the pleasure to upgrade from the 130 to the 150. The injectors, inter cooler etc are exactly the same on both, the only thing that's different is the software on the ecu.

I get 20 mpg with my 2.2 Merc / 4250 T auto A class and don't care! On the motorways we do about 75 mph on other roads we do the normal speed limit. It's about the the 'journey' not the mpg!

Never ever worried about mpg I / we are touring 75lt tank. can get 400 miles (at a push) so I guess around 24mpg .But if guage shows half and fuel is spotted at the right price .on a rest break the tank will get topped up .so another 400 possible .
An elderly Frankia 2.5 TD with a good service history and regular servicing by me .

The best thing to do is get a cruise control fitted (as has been hinted at by several posters above). This is the best way to drive for economy, and a much more relaxing journey for the driver.

What about the variable geometry turbo charger on the 150? Don't they fit that now? They used to.

It might be for some drivers but a vehicle without cruise control will always give better mpg than one with if the driver knows what they are doing. Cruise control will try to maintain speed up a hill by effectively flooring the throttle but for better mpg it is better to go slower up hills.

Don't agree with that. I don't spend the whole of a journey going up hills! CC doesn't "floor the throttle" but will increase it slightly on hills to maintain speed, in much the same way as a good driver would.

I have had two MHs with CC (which I had fitted) and can state that MPG is better with than without.

I think cruise control , especially in a van , works better with an Auto.

I think that the 150 has a different turbo. Similar story with the Mercedes 2.1 engine; 170 hp has a single turbo and the 204 hp has what is effectively twin turbo system

Are you judging your mpg by the vehicle computer reading or are you checking it from full fill to full fill?
The computer readings are often very inaccurate.
In the past we always got into 6 th gear as soon as possible but over recent years we've only use it when on good clear motorways. Leaving the van in 5th and letting the revs go to more like 2500 rather than keeping it nearer 2000 revs and not letting it labour on hills and long inclines we have improved the mpg from 23'ish to often 27/28 and sometimes 31.
Our engine is a 2.2 Citroen

Well I don't know what mpg my 3 lt A class euro 5 engined rapido is going to give me , but I ordered the 125ltr tank with it so when I go to tesco and fill up with my 20 pence a liter off voucher it will be just like driving on Spanish diesel and the mpg will be irrelevant in my quest for FUN (y):)

I think ,doing what we are all doing ,if you start worrying about MPG you start to take the enjoyment out of it.
