I get around 20-22:Angry: mpg on a run but when the engine management light comes on, for no apparent reason, I'm getting around 28-30 mpg, its a 2007 2.8 fiat engine Kontiki 645, any idea why this happens and how can I keep the higher mpg.

Sorry ray sounds like it is only indicating the higher mpg not actually achieving it. Whatever fault is bringing your engine management light up probably also sends info to your MPG ie. exhaust gas analyser. But then I have been known to be wrong in the past.oh:

We're getting higher mpg when the light comes on, when it came on before our service before we went to Spain the mechanic said the sensors were filthy, he cleaned them and it went off, when traveled to Spain we was was getting the low mpg, now haved travelled back its started to come on now and then getting the better mpg, ????????? want it on all the time LOL.

A simple question - Fact or Fiction?
Are your consumption figures based on the elctronic analysis on your vehicle or by the old fashioned method of filling the tank and recording the mileage?

It matters not a jot what the electronics say; what matters is the fact. Next time you fill up take a note of the mileage and when you fill up again register the mileage covered and calculate the mpg.

I cannot see how a vehicle's fuel consumption can possibly alter that much all on its own.

I can tell by how many time I fill up, more when the eml is off and less when its on with the help of the electronics
