Have any of the people worrying about MPG ever worked out what they spend?

5000 miles at 25mpg at £1.15 is £1046
5000 miles at 20mpg is £1308

a difference of £261 and obviously add about £52 for every extra 1000 miles ( its even less if some of your mileage is in other countries).

And this is a big difference. It gets less as the mpg goes up - the difference between 40 and 50 is £130 - sort of makes you think twice about buying a diesel car doesnt it? unless you do a lot of miles.

The same people worrying about their MPG are probably the same people walking out of peterborough with £1000 worth of awning that they will probably use once or twice.

My message is - buy what you want to buy and use it how you want to use it and stop worrying about it.

agree.. within reason..
a gas guzzling sub 10 mpg RV is heavy on the wallet and may have an impact on how often or how far you travel.. that was my experience..

the Hymer I don't worry about .. because I know it will be a huge improvement on the RV ..

If we had to think of can we afford it, it would take the shine off owning a MoHo..

Been said many times before, your only here once, so enjoy it..

Have noticed a big difference since returning to a Euro-van on MPG..

Seem to buy better quality White Wine..

driving back from spain last week i checked my mpg from fill to fill. mtorhome is 316 sprinter remapped , 4.2 tonnes and i pull a 300kg trailer with a 940 kg diesel fiat panda on it. at 60 mph through spain i was getting 22 mpg but when i came up the N10 and had to sit at 50 mph with the trucks all the way i got 25.7 mpg! didnt realise that going that little bit slower made such a difference.

The cost of fuel compared to the full cost of owning and using a motorhome is minimal and I wouldn't be too bothered about consumption.

Factor in depreciation and do too few miles you will be even more disappointed with costs per mile, I would guess that most MH's will lose more per year in value than is spent on fuel

as you have proved, it makes a huge difference... my preferred speed on Mways and A roads is the same as the HGVs.. not holding anyone up and overtaking very few..

. a very relaxed way to drive.. and the drive time is not much more ..

at the end of the day, the journey is as much a part of motorhoming as the arriving.. why rush it

We get around 10 mpg but have 2 LPG tanks, so at 53p per litre at last fill up its ok. Don't think about the mpg too much it's more about my home comforts and the overall experience of having an RV/MH. We had the same attitude to our flying holidays when we booked them, it was more about the places we wanted to visit and the experiences we would have.

This is exactly my point. a 2.7mpg increase over an average year is probably a difference of less than £200. in my book that is a minor factor in running a motorhome.

btw Isnt the N10 horrible now!!

You are right, I like to see what I can get just as a bit of a challenge but in the grand scheme of things it makes not a lot of difference, if you can afford to buy the truck I am sure you can afford the fuel, I could afford 10mpg but wouldn't want to, now that's a different thing all together.

Homebrewed beer at £0.65 per pint. £200 saving by going a bit slower. This equates to circa 300 pints of beer.

Less stress driving slower and lots of beer to drink when I get there.

Seems like a no brainer to me!

It would be far far cheaper to have a tent on the back of your bike, think of the savings there.

My two man tent cost me £450 and the push bike in touring mode with GPS and other camping kit probably adds up to £3,500 - and I haven't used any of it since last June! I could have had a month somewhere sunny with Saga for that.

Hopefully to be corrected with a week in Brittany in July. The cycle touring that is, not Saga, though nothing wrong with their holidays in my experience.

But you are right. There was an exchange of views in the CC magazine recently started off by a tugger who didn't see the point of a MH as a caravan was cheaper. They published my reply but they edited the caption of the picture I sent of us on an aire in Sevilla. For some reason the words "caravans not allowed" were deleted. Funny thing that but then they are the Caravan Club.

Not being funny but just in case you didn't know but limit with trailer in Spain is 80km/hr ( 50mph) which is slower than the artics on motorway.

Yes & no :in my case as I can't keep up with the artics it is far more stressful watching mirrors for them going by & crawling all over the back looking for the opportunity.

There are a lot of people buying motorhomes , canal boats etc with their pension as returns are worth nothing. This may be why a lot ask about mpg etc. on paper they might not really be able to afford it but being careful they can. Not everybody has lots of money and so make it work the best they can, as often said you can not take it with you.

We get 10 - 16mpg towing the big trailer with the V8 Discovery, but on LPG it is roughly 18 - 28mpg equivalent so not too bad. That is with a fully laden 3500kg trailer weight.

The Mercedes is a bit of an unknown quantity, but as long as it is no worse we'll be happy.

Fuel consumption is a concern when you're doing 2000+ miles on a trip as we did, but overall it was factored in as part of the 3-week break.

If I drive more 'considerately' I enjoy the drive more - the journey to us is as enjoyable as the stay, made more enjoyable as I am getting more miles to the gallon (about 28) which means I am paying less for the journey which makes me feel good.
However, the most enjoyment I get from this method of travelling is if I am buying less fuel - This bloody 'government' is getting less tax from me,,,,,, and that makes me feel bloody great.

A more positive twist on this is , drive faster , use more fuel , pay more tax and those poor people on benefits that are not rich like you as a Motorhome owner will be helped by your heavy right foot

I love getting a good return on the MPG , my old air cooled 2 ltr VW , was appalling , giving me between 12 and 20 mpg, and it was bloody slow up hills, totally over rated the old vw vans
However my Renault master pvc , fully loaded does between 30 and 35 mpg fully loaded including a motorbike, that really makes me pleased, i came back from a tour round cornwall and devon the other day i, got 32 mpg average and was doing between 60 and 80mph depending on the road type, the strange thing is with the Master is it gives the same MPG at 75 that it does at 60 , infact the engine seems most efficient at 75mph roughly 2.500 revs that must be the sweet spot on these engines

I do think about it, but after having VW campers for years that give about 20-25mpg, I'm happy that our much larger motorhome is giving us better than that. I try to stay at 55-60, but get bored and find myself at nearer 70 most of the time. As our Dodge Charger is getting about 9-10mpg if I nurse it at 55 and that drops if I give it the beans, trying to do 55 in the motorhome doesn't seem so important.

That reminds me of a guy I knew who hired an Escort van. He told me, "it was drinking fuel, I was doing over 80 all the way back so I could get here before I ran out of petrol"
