... any good routes to take, stopovers on the way, and would we be better staying on toll roads?..

Hi Marvin
I did Spain several times in summer as well as in winter. Never stayed on campgrounds. Potable water to be found at most filling stations, still, for tea/coffee, 5 liter canisters to be recommended. For the route: Which one are you taking? If going through central France, don't miss the A75 (free motorway from Clermont-Ferrand to Montpellier - spectacular, beautiful, nice parking areas, but don't sleep there, leave the motorway several times, get info brochure at Massiac tourist info for special itinerary, free aire in La Chapelle-Laurent, don't take the bridge at Millau, but overnight instead at free aire in Millau). Just before leaving France, nice aire in Le Boulou (either the official one behind cemetery, or on parking behind Casino).

In Spain, simply follow the coastal road (called A340 after Barcelona all the way down to Andalucía), toll road not necessary (except around Valencia and Alicante, free, however). For overnighting, drive down to the beaches - it's kind of a lotto if the Guardia Civil lets you stay or not... Some places I did: Empúriabrava, public parking at Vilanova i la Geltrú (41.21390°N 1.72501°E), take the motor way around Tarragona (free!), Alcossebre, Ribera de Cabanes (in front of campground Torre la Sal), San Juan de los Terreros (37.34982°N 1.68078°W).

Happy travelling and best regards from Switzerland
