I would query your advice for "Je voleur a volé mon....." if talking to a gendarme, that could easily be misinterpreted

Just had a quick skim through the German phrases - and most of them are incorrect, I'm afraid. Are these machine translations?

Very useful, thanks

I usually employ a loud slow speaking voice when communicating with Johnny Foreigner, accompanied by lots of arm waving. For some reason, they seem to like it, they shrug their shoulders a lot, listen intently, shake their heads and then light one after another of their filthy foreign cigarettes whilst offering me an onion or a clove of garlic. I know they like our little exchanges as they always seem to delighted when I drive off. Presumably it is the pleasure they have derived from my exquisite use of their language. And I leave them feeling happy, myself, in the comforting knowledge that they now realise just how polyglot we English are

Might be of some use when away(y)

Rob:)
Some might, but some would only be of value as jokes.

I need a lift to the nearest town
Je besoin d'un ascenseur à la ville la plus proche

Quite apart from being grammatically incorrect, this says that one requires a lift (as opposed to a staircase or an escalator) in the nearest town.

Numerous others of similar standard.

Did I imagine it, or is there an App that you can speak into and choose the language for the translation to appear on screen?

There does appear to be several free ones now on Google Play, no idea if any are any good, you'd have to experiment I suppose.
