Hi all,
Sorry if this has been asked before but here goes. We are considering selling our VW campervan and moving up to a small motorhome of the van conversion type, height approximately 2.6 meters.
What we would like to know is what problems have members experienced in finding available parking for motorhomes in towns, cities and seaside resorts with regards to height restriction barriers in car parks in the uk.
Many thanks.

Hello @frumtarn and welcome to the Fun.
Currently also in Barnsley... just till Tuesday though.
Yes, height barriers can be a real pain... car parks, supermarkets, park-&-rides... but you can usually find something, somewhere!

When we first had a motorhomes we discovered problems, which is why I started http://www.motorhomeparking.co.uk/.
It is not difficult, though, with a little bit of forward planning, to find places to stay where it is possible to use public transport, cycle or walk.
Also, even where there are no off street parking facilities it is usually possible to find somewhere to park on street.

Not long enough!
Hi, some height barriers are 2.2 metres high, even a 4x4 wouldn't get in.
You can always find places to park up.

Sometimes you have to be a bit more creative about where you look for parking, but there's usually somewhere to go.

Also in busy supermarket type car parks it's always worth parking with a view to making a successful exit in your longer vehicle.

enjoyed the freedom over the last couple of years but still Wish we could have got away more often
Hi,

We only bought our Motorhome in the spring and ours is a coach built 3 metres high and 6.3 but we have not had any major problems.

We have visited lots of coastal areas in the UK and when we have come across a height restriction just kept going until we found somewhere to park without a barrier.

Might mean a bit more walking and not tried to park in the middle of any big towns or cities and tend to shop at the edge of town supermarkets with car park that do not seem to have height restrictions.

I am sure you will appreciate the extra facilities inside the van and extra space which should make up for driving past the odd height restricted car park.

We looked at some pvc's at the Peterborough show and although we had ordered our coach built were super impressed how some of the converters used the space.

Hope you enjoy.

Watch out for height restrictions. Supermarket car parks are often more spacious. If you're long, look for spaces around the outside where you can overhang the back end. Also park on an end to give better access to the side entrance. You should be able to manage but be prepared to walk a little further.

Even with height barriers it's sometimes possible to access supermarket carparks via the "tradesmans entrance" i.e where the delivery truck go in. But like everybody else, we've rarely had problems parking although we also avoid town centres etc.
