Hi Everyone,

Just had my private plate put on the motorhome and the log book came back today, so I ended up reading it.

I noticed that under taxation type my van is noted as "HGV"
Is this correct?

Its an Autoroller 600 on a twin wheel transit 3850 KG

Ours is a "private HGV" the private bit might be important, but it's fine as the road tax is lower than a sub 3.5 tonne.

How much do you pay for road tax ?

£165 should be the answer.

Send the V5 back with a cover letter explaing it should be PRIVATE HEAVY GOODS (VEHICLE)

I need to check, I paid for it when I bought the van and I am sure it was about £245 , never questioned it really, and I had vague memories recentley about this being discussed then spotted this on the log book when it came back today

if that is you in your avatar, you may need to check your licence. its fine for the old buggers that passed their test years ago. now you have to take another test above 3500kg. not knowing you though i have no idea of your background but asking this question makes me wonder

Peter a bit of good news for you - if you did pay out £245 for the road tax you need to make sure you get a refund from whoever got the tax for you as it should only have been £165 ... possibly a genuine mistake on the seller/dealer's part but it should have been picked up and refunded to you then.

Well, seems all that fuss for nothing, just gone back through my bank statements and it seems I did pay £165 road tax, I had it in my head it was more. Sorry for wasting everyones time :(

Is it still worth sending off the v5 to get it changed?

YES!!!!!
Read the fine print on the V5, mistakes on it are basically your fault, so if you get stopped, you will be liable that DVLA screwed up.
Think about it this way, what do you think would happen if your car's V5 said that it was green, when in fact it was red, and the police pulled you over? 'Nuff said? :D
Also, make sure you send a covering letter, the DVLA have a habit of showing thee changes as a change of owner, so make sure the number of previous owners doesn't increase when you get the corrected V5 back!

Don't see why not, are you sure they charged you that much as usually they will have details of the vehicle etc so it should have been the right price originally?

Edited - just seen that you've discovered you only paid £165 ... silly boy!

Yep, it was only assigned 2 days ago, cant believe how quick they have done it to be honest, its still coming up as my old car it was on with another vehicle check i tried earlier, guessing it just takes a bit for their systems to see it properly, off away in it next Monday so hoping its all updates for then, will take all the paperwork with me just in case

The plate does come back to something that is very definitely not a motorhome on all databases, you may find that you will get a few 'tugs' under ANPR until the systems sorts itself out.

Likewise, Similar check of the R-V, I sold in 2012, shows it was registered as "Private Light Goods" (At close to 7tonne on the weighbridge!) and the taxation then was Circa £165.

Would suggest that It will be best rectified, as "suggested" by the little note that comes with the "New" V5, saying that "you should check for errors".

BTW. Your restriction code (107) I believe limits your "Train" to 8.25t (C+1E) under "Grandad" Rights, and needs a Test pass to be upgraded to 12t. (not that I expect it matters in your specific case). But some R-V`rs got caught out on this towing Trailers behind Large R-V`s. and exceeding 8.5t "Train". In my case back them I had a full HGV. so was not an issue until I passed 65. then it was the £90--00 D4 Medical Every year. Which I Personally believe is an expression of ageism By Government. (the same ones that now want "you" to work to 70)
