How close do you want to be. I use Google latitude that tells me where my son is in the US and visa versa but only within >100m

Find my iPhone works very well!

Just remember that GSM works well in dense areas of population. If your thinking of a vehicle (motorhome) then the van is often going to be in places where the GSM signal is weak or non existent.

As you need the GSM device to be communicating with a minimum of three cells ideally for triangulation it may not be the best medium.

There are tracking systems that link direct to communication satellites that are becoming more affordable

Just Google "find my phone" Jim and you will find loads of apps from FOC upwards.
