Sorry to hear of this, the fire at Mimizan was a superb facility.
We spent a few days there on our way down to Spain last year and were looking to return there at some time.
Brisey.

Hardly surprising given the rampant seafront development round there.

By way of compensation, Capbreton aire (about an hour's drive further south) is very similar in character, and as close to the beach if a little further from the town. Last month (April) it cost us 10 Euros a night including EHU and wi-fi, and the bread van turned up most mornings.

A similar distance to the north you've got the Biscarrosse-Plage aire, which is among trees for shade. It's set a bit further back from the beach but the walk through the dunes isn't unpleasant. The resort's a bit tacky, but so is Mimizan-Plage. No EHU there, it has a medium-sized supermarket a short distance away.

Sadly a sign of the times. We have fond memories of many, many happy holidays when the children were small at the old Albatross campsite just south of Barcelona, now a massive apartment complex.

I fear you are correct.. there are many aires on prime real-estate, especially in coastal areas, just ripe for the developer..
Capbreton is prime example.. there are many others.. and not only aires, Municipal sites are being sold for development or into private ownership as commercial sites.. and charging commercial rates.

Not just France, in this country we are also being squeezed out, height barriers, no overnight parking bans, many camp sites costing more than a hotel room.. Campsites now erecting Yurts , and toadying to the glampers.. the age of cheap CLs , basic sites, .. being lost..

In Spain and Portugal.. sites are also being closed to make way for developers, wild camping places are being closed and or motorhomes being moved on.. Morocco Atlantic coast.. same thing, wild camping banned and places closed..

France was a socialist country.. catering for the 'people' that is now changing.. and fast

Hi ScotJim...we first went there approx 2005, a ginger haired young French policeman would come and collect the money, he spoke very good English, over a short period of time I got chatting to him, he told me his name was Andrew Dawson...not very French, but his grandparents were Scottish.
We last saw him in 2014, a little less hair, but he remembered me.
We have friends who live in Newquay, but are from Leeds, Alan & Sylvia, who remember meeting you on the aire several times.
Always used to stop there on the way back from Spain, it will be sorely missed.
