Microwaves and Inverters (1 Viewer)

I want to run a small microwave in my Campervan.
The previous owner fitted a Power Inverter rated at 800w (continuous) 1200w (peak). Would this Inverter be capable of running a small microwave or do I need a higher rated inverter?

As there is only myself to cater for the accent is on small microwave plus the fact that space is also limited. Any advice appreciated.

The governing issue is the power rating of the Microwave.

Do you have one in mind?

What is the Wattage rating.

There is a brief surge at switchon that will exceed this continuous rating.

Hi I have an 1800watt inverter, peak power in the range of 2500watts, it won't run the installed m/w which I think is about 1000watts, knocks it out straightaway.

You need a big inverter to run a m/w.

Not yet no. Havent bought a microwave until I know if it will be successful or not. As i've no idea about power ratings/mains electrics I think i will need to ask one of the electricians at my workplace if this idea is feasible or not. Judging from what i've read so far it isnt looking too good!

The reason i hoped to run one off an inverter is because i rarely go 'on site', preferring to stay off road and 'wild camp'. The whole van is set up for that very purpose.

Operating a Microwave with a Power Inverter

The power rating used with microwave ovens is the "cooking power" which refers to the power being "delivered" to the food being cooked. The actual operating power requirement rating is higher than the cooking power rating (for example, a microwave with "advertised" rating of 600 watts usually corresponds to almost 1100 watts of power consumption). The actual power consumption is usually stated on the back of the microwave.

Also found a company selling 500 watt microwave together with an 800 watt inverter which suggests my inverter should run a micro of that size? I'm not looking for a huge domestic thing.....i'm only running an 'economy class' Camper!

Hi being the nice chap I am (my words)I have just carried my home m/w to the garage to try this --only to find ny son has nicked the inverter I bought 2 yrs ago (never used) so not a lot of helpoh: it says on the back power com 1200w on a 800 w m/w sorry:thumb:

Is it really worth trying to run a microwave from an ineverter?

You need at least double the microwave output power from the inverter, which means some fat cables and extra batteries, plus a charging system that can handle them.

Thats' alot of weight, wiring & expense to heat your Pot-Noodle
