Is the FACTS site down or is it just me that can't get in. A message says something about a Sql server being down. I don't understand :Eek!:

Well, nothing to worry about, was just a glitch of some sort, I am happy to report I am free to surf the world wide web without restriction once more. Phew! I'm glad about that, I don't like being restricted!!:Laughing::Laughing:

Don't be absurd, I try very hard not to be! I value my freedom too much, I like being able to wander at will throughout the vast forums of the web!

    Hi Suzy

There have been reports in the Northern part of the country from other members of MHF of problems unrelated to the forum itself so thats probably it.

John - Suzy is a lovely and fair person where ever she goes as you will discover when you get to meet her. As for that husband of hers though, he is just as nice :Laughing:

Its happened again. This is definately a problem with the MHF Site because the message is from PHP Nuke saying they are sorry for the inconvenience, just happened again. Still says its a SQL server problem as well.

I have seen this sort of thing before but I have only seen it used when you want to 'block' or make it difficult for someone to access your site. There are many tools on the market to do this and it just could be that this is one of them. The theory is that if you make it so difficult eventually the undesirables will stop trying to access it. I can't believe that this is one of them, it won't be, will it?

    :Eek!: Oh! Dear! :-

There seems to be a problem with the MySQL server, sorry for the inconvenience.

    We should be back shortly

 This used to happen frequently before (and the reason) they went subscription only.

I hope everything is alright with them?

Well its strange, there must be problems because now I can get in but it runs like a bag of nails!

The front sheet has not been updated since about 2.44 they must be having big problems and when I click to refresh it starts to then gives up.

    Hope its nothing serious! :Eek!:

I do not know what caused the blip today, but sometimes these things happen even on the very best sytstem setups.

We share server space at the moment, but if, as we get more members, the strain on this space might start to tell and we could experience problems with slow responses or downtime fom our database. This situation is being monitored by our server provider and we have a dedicated server standing by. This will increase the costs we pay but the price is still very reasonable. However the benefits will be considerable in respect size of server space, bandwidth and speed of response.

Members will never be asked to contribute to these running costs, this resource will always be free to its members

:Err: Correct me if I am wrong? But one of the reasons given for going Subscription, was to pay for a Dedicated Server with another Dedicated server as a back up. :Err:

I read in a post a little while ago from the owner of the MHF Business that they paid a little less than £2000 a year for their server. They collect subs far in access of this amount, around £18000. Properly managed the costs of the server can be raised from advertisers alone. Unless of course the site is your business and a source of income, if that is the case, then yes, charging subs is a good idea. Even with a super duper server, this site will always be free to its members, it is not a business.

Use a few network tools (traceroute, dig, nslookup, whois etc) and you will find that the DNS A records for both the MH site and the OWT Dorz online shop thingy all resolve back to the same IP address?

Of course so does the "third" (not so known) domain, and of course the petshop. The Primary SOA DNS record for them all is also as it happens the same IP address. Go figure

BTW - Nice of you to promote the site in the title, Google loves you, and So does Nuke. PMSL
