Where we are in France, we get to see the Milky Way on clear nights, as there is so little light-pollution. We also see satellites passing overhead, and shooting stars (meteorites).

The August Perseid meteor showers are always fantastic to watch, but this year, with a new moon, there will be no "natural light pollution", so it will be easier than ever to spot the meteorites.

A wonderful site to see!!

Where we live in Wales there is no pollution at all, we also get fantastic skies, sometimes in winter it can take your breath away, even the Milky Way well defined and appearing so close. Light pollution should be a crime, you can see so much more without it! ::bigsmile:

It should indeed, JimJam.

Mind you, nothing in Europe comes close to the skies I witnessed in the Andes whilst doing a charity trek a few years ago - that really WAS breathtakingly beautiful! No lights at all for hundreds of miles (certainly several dozen miles, anyway), and the stars looked close enough that if you climbed that mountain "over there" you could touch them! Absolutely fantastic!!

Well, don't know if anyone saw them - I saw a few, but not a spectacular display. Just the odd one or two wizzing through the sky............
