Still looking to change Symphony because we need a bit more storage and living space. Any opinions on 1992 Hymer 550s on Mercedes chassis. 2.9 diesel with automatic box. BUSBY.

You'd be very unlucky to come unstuck with that spec. An age before too much electronics, an age when they were built to last.

I have seen rust on those Hymers round the skirt/outside locker area. But they are always a Tardis inside.

Always subject to serious damp checks of course.

Not sure on the auto bit...however, the Mercedes lump is well regarded (good for 500k with servicing so they say), just disappointed they don't do the 600-700 with Mercedes motors...ho hum.

They come in various configs, which is tripping me up with the twin axle units i have been looking at myself...often mis-listed on the sites if you check back with the Hymer layouts themselves....just google it.

As you might expect with the older units, some of these have had a tough life.....

I am looking at units from Germany myself (seem better cared for and spec'd) - working out how tricky it is to get them back here - several other posts on this on the forum.

Just don't forget the Hymer 550/ 555's are on a 310D base, not the twin rear wheel 410D.

They therefore have a much less payload. I'd prefer the 660/ 670/700 of that vintage with the payload, providing of course you have the right driving licence for 3.5 - 7.5 ton!

But I would prefer a S700 wouldn't I ::bigsmile: ?

Cheers

The 550s has a U shaped lounge with a small boot at the rear. I brought one in from Germany a few years ago and they are a good van. There is one here that has a new engine and will not make much money. If it was me I would be looking at the 410 chassis with either the Hymer 660 or RMB body. the RMB has the garage and the 660 has lockers. The 700s although a bit bigger has a huge overhang that does cause problems. The 550s is here Link Removed and below is the RMB. The 5 banger 2.9 Merc diesel is bombproof if the oil is changed religiously at 5000 miles.

If linky no worky, try this link. Link Removed
