Can't find a definitive oil type recommendation for both the full auto gearbox or the rear axle. The model is Hymer Starline 680 2005/6 with a full auto gearbox. The base is a Mercedes Sprinter 416 with the 2.7 ltr 5 cylinder 160 ps engine again 2005.

I read somewhere that the gearbox is a sealed unit and doesn't need topping up, but not sure that is correct.

Have both the Mercedes Sprinter Operating Instructions wallet and a Brooklands Books workshop manual for the Sprinter CDI to 2006 which includes the 2.7 engine, but can't find the oil specs. Would also like to know what the brake fluid and power steering fluid specs are too.

Have also seen the MB Specs for operating fluids and know that the 229.5 Multigrade engine oils is the one for our model (Scot Jim passed that one on) but don't know which of the auto and rear axle sheets apply to our motorhome.

I would really appreciate any links to the correct specifications for these oils, thanks

Cant help with box and diff oil grades but you have the correct engine oil....MB229.51
My gearbox doesnt even have a dipstick....main dealer check only.

Cheapest i could find was this on ebay and its genuine MB oil.
Enough for a couple of changes with a bit for topping up.

But oils in both are quite old now (11 years old) and I do believe in first maintaining levels and second in changing oils, do you agree?

Gearbox oil in my Chrysler (3ltr merc V6 engine and merc auto box) suggests changing at around 100000 miles.
I would expect the diff to be similar mileage.
No mention of a time scale, just miles.....and I'm getting close at 94000 mls

I think that's a fair comment but if someone were to say "here a sealed can of engine oil and don't worry it's 10 years old but never opened I'm not sure how many of us would buy it. We are told fuel and oils deteriorate over time even without being used, as do tyres all due to 'ageing'.

But as Mercedes say it's 100,000 miles then that has to be good enough for me, I'll read the service record booklet a bit later as the oil changes and mileages are all there. The MH has only done 9000 miles from new so nothing is even run in yet.

Thanks

OK, here's the MB recommendation for full auto gearbox and rear axle -

Full Auto Gearbox - at 2nd full service (76,000 mls) change oil and filter :~ thereafter every 10 years

Rear Axle - Model 741.980 > Type 905.6 - at 1st Oil Service Plus (9,000 mls) change oil :~ thereafter every 10 years

- Model 741.130 / .407 / .408 - change oil every 10 years

All I need now is to work out what the correct oils are
