Mercedes 310D Motorhome Vibration over 40mph! (1 Viewer)

Hi there,

New to the forums, all advice welcome.

We have purchased a Mercedes 310D Elorcuise Motohome 1994, very solid chassis needs a bit of TLC on body and internal.

When we drove it home when we went over 40mph it began to vibrate, my ignorance made me think of the uni joints on the propshaft or play in the propshaft, but all fine.

Help!

most common cause of the vibration over 40mph is a damaged tyre, a tyre out of balance or a buckled wheel. an out of balance propshaft or uj would be there at all speeds getting worse with speed.
with an older van like yours my first instinct is the tyres may be older than 5 years and despite good tread may be delaminating and splitting

If it's the rear tyres it will vibrate through the body/chassis, the fronts will vibrate through the steering.

not through steering so will start at the rear....

It might be interesting to know the age of the tyres, look for a date mark, week followed by year of manufacture, regular comments on here regarding age of tyres / replace every 5 yeas or so

Look for marker like this

can be confusing as in first example, but will give week of manufacture followed by year of manufacture

it can however end up on inside of wheel when fitted so you may not find it easily

Hey all, thank you for all the replies and welcomes. The culprit seems to be the center bearing on the propshaft. Any one have any ideas on the cost for refurbishing the propshaft and the center bearing, approx?

I am able to take it off and take it to a specialist. Just wanting a rough idea on the cost.

many years since i had a propshaft refurbished and balanced. but i would expect £300+

While you have the propshaft off, you should get the UJ's changed too. Don't know the cost but I would think 3 or 4 hours work plus parts. So, the cost shown above wouldn't be far out.

Most of the Mercedes vans of that series have swagged uj joints and not changeable but the centre bearing are easy to fit . One half of the prop is a press fit into the bearing and has a internal spline into which the other half of the prop fits. If the uj,s are worn I used to machine the weld off and remove the whole assembly and fit a new yoke uj and flange . There are plenty of firms who advertise in the Commercial motor who do this type of work and will also supply centre bearings . Mercedes prices used to be eye wateringly expensive . Mike

The centre bearing is replaceable without changing anything else, it is often the rubber mounting perished rather than the bearing itself.

I have the Mercedes EPC Parts system on my laptops.
