What a humbling experience it is.

We went about 3 years ago and it was packed.

We went there a few years back - as said very moving - get there early - we used to go to a lovely restaurant on the town side - left hand side. Good food and good service then wander up to Menin Gate just after 7.30 ready for 8pm local time - never any guarantees to how many buglers will appear. Plan on going again in the not too distant future - so much to see there

I took my sea scouts there about 20 years ago when we were camping near Ghent. I was very proud of them and their turnout and they were very interested when we looked at the records afterwards.

I am no fan of the Bagpipes, for many years it seemed to me to be the sound of cats being abused, but when we heard the bagpipes being played within the Menin Gate in the evening service my perception of them changed.

The acoustics in the Gate are quite phenomenal and the sound of the bagpipes is exceptionally inspiring.

With a silent crowd the rousing emotional music brings many to tears as they remember the dead.

I would suggest you also visit Tyne Cot Cemetery, about five miles from Ypres, and take time to reflect at the waste of life that lies under the immaculate lawns and ground of the Cemetery.

There is a video of the approach to Tyne Cot among my videos.

Who saw Last Night`s Festival of remembrance?. The Thing that moved me most. I think, was the Young Blind Soldier who spoke the opening message. and his absolute Trust in the Officer who walked and talked him through it!.
