This morning I got a very frosty reception from my GP when I asked him for 3 mths worth of prescriptions in readiness for our next trip.
I did get them in the end :thumb: but he told me that NHS were tightening up on things and that he doubted if he would be able to issue a 'scrip. for longer than 28 days next time.
Has any one else had any problems ?

Mike.

prescriptions

Yep same old same old problem - get 2 months at the moment - not easy to plan time away - cant manage without tabs - heart and B12 and arthritis- so what is their problem if at nearly 60 we want to go and have couple of months away to chill - yeh ok we need to be checked but at our age dont we know if we dont feel as we should.
What do I know - probably not a lot and glass half empty instead of half full.
Hey ho - keep smiling and cope xxxxxx

Our GPs normally issue two items per prescription "line" - and I think that is the factor rather than the time over which the drug is taken.

So, if an item is one month's worth of a "permanent" course of tablets then two months worth will be prescribed. They are always very good, if a further drug is needed, in prescribing extra so that the new one can be brought into line with existing medications to make the repeat prescription process simpler - but that might mean issuing two prescriptions so that two charges have to be paid (fair enough as it's for the patient's convenience).

Being asthmatic I use a Beclometasone dipropionate inhaler each day. As the amount I need to take is not high, one inhaler lasts me 100 days. The doctor always prescribes two inhalers each time I get a repeat so that lasts me over 6 months.

Prior to a trip we can only get 2 months supply from our GP. You are supposed to de-register from your practice if you're away for over 3 (I think!) months, also hand in your Medical Card!:Eeek:

So dont tell anyone how long you're going for! Be vague!

Ours are on automatic repeat - Tesco collects them and a friend collects from Tesco throughout the winter and stockpiles them for us!! So, each winter we have accumulated a stock to get us through.
Always keep our fingers crossed that the doc doesn't change the medication!!:Eeek:

If we're short of anything we can buy it over the counter in Spain usually. Sometimes that can work out very expensive though - depending on the medication!

Rabeprazole is about €7 for a month as is Verapamil. Cardura works out about €50 a month!:Eeek:

Yes they are getting very tight. It's not as if you were taking more over the same period. I really can't see where they are coming from. The answer is to build your supplies up over a period of time since it seems the dates for repeat prescritions is alway short of 28 days and you can soon get in front.

The idea seems to be (though never tried to confirm this) that the NHS is trying to limit its funding (i.e. the amount it raises from the taxes we all pay) to no more than two items per prescription "line".

Is that unreasonable?

My GP used to give 6 months but now reduced it down to 3. As before he says if it's any longer than 3 months I'm seen as having left the country - which I will have. He's pretty sure I can get my fix ( Omeprazole) over the counter in several European Countries. Failing that I'll be super skinny in about 6 months from not eating :ROFLMAO:

Before we leave on our winter travels in the van we get three months supply of medication and a private prescription for two months which we get made up at Tescos. both of us have been on permanent medication for the last ten years and we have a very good relationship with our GP.

Medication that is prescription only in the UK can be bought over the counter in many European countries. Just give them the pill packet and get a quote.

A word of warning for anybody visiting Greece, medications containing codeine are restricted.

If you are taking any regular medication containing codeine you should have a letter from your doctor and take no more than one months supply into country.

Safe travelling.

You need to be very careful with that Viagra, I tried some but I was so slow in swallowing the pills that I finished up with a very stiff neck.:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

When I ran out of pills.

:ROFLMAO:With 2 days of my holiday to go I discovered I needed pills for these 2 nights, went to local main chemist and got nothing but cheek and ignorance from the chemist! the lady at the counter had already told me that I had no chance of her prescribing anything, 4 pain killers was all that was needed, even a phone call to my local chemsit but no help whatsoever, she commented that if I need anything I should attend at the local hospital. There were several people waiting to be served before the ones getting their dailly fix of whatever and they were astonished with her behavior also. Now I make sure I have enough pills.
