I see that the 2.5 Master is available at 120 BHP & 150 BHP, is the higher rated one just done by chipping it? I looked on some of the engine chipping sites & they only seem to quote for the 120 BHP upgrade. On the Adria I am getting it it gives the cost of £10000 for the extra 30 BHP where most of the engine tuning specialists are much less.

At ten grand for 30 BHP extra, I can't imagine many takers.....

These engines are understressed anyway and I saved money and got a re-map done instead. Don't forget to tell the insurance company - most don't charge extra for a remap on a motorhome (or at least Adrian Flux don't)

Sorry  Late at night & got to many :Eeek: 000's :Eeek: should be £1000.

Even at £1000 just for reprogramming it at source seems a lot , also if this is just a re-programming from Renault I'm suprised that somebody hasn't got around to hacking or copying it.
Quite a fw years ago I had a friend who used to mess around with re-programming ECU's he had all the equipment where he could read the chip from one car & save the data for writing to another car. Maybe they are better protected now but then it used to take a matter of minutes.

Surely the real problem is not being able to write to the ECU - the problem is knowing what to write.

Writing dodgy data yo the ECU will certainly wreck the engine.

Without doing serious testing I would not trust myself to make any such modes, I would only rely upon a company with a known track record.

I wasn't actually making the suggestion about flashing the ECU, in fact the van I am getting is the 2.5DCi 150, I was just wondering why there is a price difference of £1000 (got the right amount of 000's this time ) I have seen that the 120 can be chipped to 150 (146 BHP seems to be the actual figure) If the Renault factory for the 150 is just a re-mapping of the 120 why is it so expensive or am I missing something, is the engine different in other ways . Just curios if anybody should know the answer.

I know some of the companies who do engine re-mapping do it on an individual basis on a rolling road but I don't think that they charge that much.

most often it is exactly the same engine etc and just the s/w in the ecu.VW and Audi are prime examples they will list a model eg 105bhp 115 bhp and 150bhp.Same vehicle same engine but a different map in the ecu and a vast price difference on the vehicle. The new fiat 2.3 130 multijet when remapped will give more power and better performance than the 160 standard and save a fortune in purchase costs.

I agree the differnece is almost only in the mapping but the manufacturers have the knowledge and data to do the job properly, fully (well almost fully) test the engine plus the fact that you are covered by their well established, if limited, warranty.

With a third party company you have no idea how much how much they really know about engine mapping, how much they really know about your engine, how much testing, if any, they have done on this engine and you will certainly not have a well established warranty from them.

If it all goes wrong you are on your own. Not a risk I would take with an engine costing many thousands of pounds unless I was very sure of the companies pedigree.

Have to agree with you there, on another forum I've had a very good report from someone using the 2.5L with 120BHP, he reports that he has had 100% reliability and gets 28 to 33 mpg over a mixed bag of road types and across all seasons. He said he might have prefered the higher power engine on some very long hills but generally it copes well. What is your BHP ?

My van is the DCi150 with the Qucikshift 6 auto gearbox. Just on our way back from our first trip. After almost 5000 miles my average fuel consumption is 26.52mpg with the best 28.44 & worst 24.45.
I kept the revs down for the recommended running in period, I found hat it didn't like staying in 6th gear below 55mph & cruised more comfortably at around 60mph at 2000 rpm.
Overall I am pleased with how the van performs, there seems to be loads of power when I need it.

That seems to tally with the info from the other site user I was quoting, I think he said his overall mpg (On the 120) was 28.5 so 26.52 for the 150 seems spot on.

Crikey! Quantum look good, sorry to hijack this thread but has anyone got real evidence based experience of these types of tuning ?

After buying a Master (150) last year I was ready to have it chipped until I had used it for 5000 miles. It pulls like a train, even at 3850 plus nearly a ton of towing. Cruising at any speed is effortless and returns of 32mpg without my trailer and 27mpg fully laden. After visiting a local chip specialist he stated that the only possible gain would be extra speed which in turn would knock my fuel consumptiom, i declined and after 8000 miles am very happy.
As this is a leisure pursuit I am very happy with everything the Renault has to offer me. Think long and hard before trying to enhance such a good return on mpg.

Call in at your local main dealer parts dept compare the part numbers of things like clutch, discs, suspension, exhaust etc and see if they are the same. I would think they have been uprated to take the additional bhp. This is what I did for my 174bhp vw compared it with the 130 bhp.

Not entirely sure but believe that the factory fit a slightly different turbo on 150 bhp engine. Might be worth checking turbo part number.

That's my understanding, too. Different turbo and possibly uprated clutch.

It seems most people take it by tapping into the removable fuel tank access panel that is fitted to the top of your fuel tank and houses the fuel take off and return pipes and the sender unit. You'll probably have to drop the tank to access it ?
