When I bought my MacBook I was told it didn't need any additional security software. Yesterday when I was browsing I had one of those notifications that I had a Malware virus. I'm hoping it was just a scam to try to get me to buy some additional software.

It all seems to be running OK but I'm worrying a bit. Should I be?

We too have macbooks and no notifications.

I would think Apple would announce it if known so I would guess its a scam but would be vigilant anyway.

Have three Apple computers.. no alerts or any malware.. sounds like a scam

but never be complacent.. Macs are less likely to be attacked.. but they are not immune..

take usual precautions, never open email attachments unless you know where they have come from .. don't visit 'dodgy' sites.. or share on peer to peer networks.. make sure your Apple software is up to date ..

Viruses, Malware, Trojans etc, don't attack.. we invite them in ..

When I bought my last Computer I received a Malware notification with a phone number to call, I called the number and it was a scam what they wanted to do was have me give them permission to check the hard drive at a distance, when I said do you really think people are that stupid he shouted Yes and started to get very verbally abusive.

There really are some bastards out there.

Getting better month by month.
I had a similar email stating my system was under attack, so I closed the email and moved on. The next email was from a virus protection company. Deffo a scam on my one however I do have virus protection. Belt and braces.

That's a scam site with a URL made to look like it's something to do with Apple. How did you get to it in the first place? (You can refuse to answer this question on the grounds that it might incriminate you).

I was looking up info on the Americas Cup races today on France and where I might be able to view it live. Some so called 'free view' channels popped up quickly followed by the scam site.

it was in spam, so I deleted along with the other 500+ spam email (y)

Our rugby club email addresses are hosted by gmail.

My one criticism is that IMO the spam filters are far too trigger happy.

I've found that emails between ourselves, i.e. a message from ...@ketteringrugbyclub.com to ....@ketteringrugbyclub.com, can end up in the spam folder. It's usually if they contain more than one email address in the body of the message. We use HTML signatures that contain our email address so that's not particularly helpful, especially when a lot of the people involved are not very techy.

Sophos not only protects the Mac, it also detects Windows malware, preventing a Mac user passing on stuff that, while not affecting the Mac, could be bad news for others.

Anything that says something like 'we've detected a problem with your computer' is almost certainly a scam, like the Microsoft phone calls saying much the same.
