Time to head north next Saturday and will be coming up the A7 towards Lyons.
Every time I've done this route I've just gone straight through Lyons and picked up the Autoroute again on the north side and every time I've regretted it and vowed to go around the city (on the eastern side) next time.
It's not that difficult to plot a route to do that but if anyone has a tried and tested way of avoiding Saturday traffic in Lyons, I'd be pleased to give it a try.

I wouldn't avoid it - stop and have some of their delicious food!

Going round is my preference, but then avoiding the motorway is another.

Lyon has some great tunnels and I have driven there a number of times, its not that bad, just take it easy and have a good sat nav system that will make an allowance for losing the signal and failing to alert you to the next exit.

Traffic can be heavy and the cost of the tunnels is ok.

Great food, if you do stop try,,

    Thanks Shiftzz,
I know those tunnels very well and that's why I'm looking for an alternative.
On the last two occasions I've driven through there have been accidents in the tunnels with tailbacks to Nice, well long anyway!
The last time was nearly 3 hours and, as you know, once committed to that route it's not that easy to change direction.
I try to avoid cities and toll roads but sometimes circumstances dictate otherwise.

Having driven through Lyon and also around I would say it is more relaxed driving around.
Not sure of the mileage difference but last time I did it some friends went through whilst I went around and ended up south of Lyon waiting for them.
