    For convenience last year I tagged the MH insurance onto my existing car policy, promising myself that I would shop around this year. I just got my renewal quote and although it's not too bad I tried a couple of other places, including Sureterm who offered me a premium of about £40 a year lower than my current insurer. The main differences in the policies being;

Higher excess £250 vs current of £150
£5K contents insurance, though I already have this level of cover on my household insurance

Other than that the policies seemed very similar.

The man on the phone told me it was underwritten by Equity Redstar and stated this was excellent as they are their preferred underwriter. When I said I wanted to think about it and asked for the quote in writing he got quite pushy, suggesting I would have to go through the whole process of quotation again if I didn't take the policy there and then. He also offered to go back to the underwriters and see if he could get a lower price. I explained I was not going to make a decision today and he finally gave up.

My main reason for hesitation was that my current insurer gives very good customer service. We've had three no fault motor claims, one of which included personal injury. On each occasion it has been as easy as these things can be to deal with - you have to expect a certain level of hassle and disruption after all.

I just googled Equity Redstar and immediately found over 45 very dissatisfied claimants which makes me thing I am better paying a little bit more for the assurance of good customer service.

Anyone got any positive experience of Equity Redstar that they would care to share?

Used them for a few years on our commercial vehicle insurance, never had a claim so cant comment but it will be the broker that was being pushy not the insurance company.

You need to take a look at the bigger picture, if you can only find 45 people who are unsatisfied out of the tens or hundreds of thousands of customers i think your onto a good thing. Did you google any other insurance companies to see how 45 complaints compares to the rest?? Even then you have no idea of how many policy holders each company has so its really not a reliable guage. If your happy with the your current insurer and they gave good service why change, ring them and tell them youve got a better quote, i bet they will match it!!:thumb:

Remember you will always hear about the problems people have had but never the other side of the coin simply because people like to moan

Id stick with the compnay i was happy with for the sake of £40 :thumb:

I'm amazed if your house policy covers goods in a MH, the risk is so different. Have you put a magnifying glass on the terms.

    Brian,

My household insurance covers £5K's worth of "personal effects" while outside the home. This specifically includes clothing, electrical items such as MP3 players, portable radio's and TV's and my camera equipment (which is seperately listed on the schedule).

Theft from an unattended locked motor vehicle is specifically included in the policy provided the items were concealed and there has been a forced entry. Where no forced entry is evident or items were not concealed then the maximum they will pay out is £1,000

Always a difficult thing to get right. I have just recd my re-newal for Home/Contents at £200 Saga gave me the same at £107. Renewal for M/H is £398 and Saga quoted £255.
Car still to do but I guess it may be Saga again the sale persons were never pushy and details were e miled to me immediately so that I could look at them at my leisure.

It really pays to search the web and compare deals etc.

Fair enough. I'd not count an claiming above £1K. Is lock picking, which is not unknown, forced entry ? I hope you don't get to test the cover for real. Same here for that matter.

We claimed through equity redstar when the front of our motorhome was stolen last summer.

They were an absolute nightmare to deal with but ........ read on

It was only by putting in a complaint to the ombudsman that they finally got things sorted out correctly.

Equity Redstar are part of Lloyds so when a complaint goes into the Ombudsman it is forwarded to the Lloyds team to resolve.

Give them their due, they worked extremely hard to sort it all out for us. Not only that, the points that I raised with them, are now being worked on to improve their service to motorhome owners.

As an example, they did not have a list of approved motorhome repairers who are motorhome specialists, but they are now working on this and but will soon have a comprehensive list which will make things much better for others claiming in the future.
