Since 2008 after caravanning for 20 years
Decided to head back to France this year and think we may visit Lorraine Alsace having only shot through in the past. Does anyone have any 'must sees' or nice sites or towns to stopover? All suggestions appreciated. We will travel from North to South as we need to end up on the west side of Paris to visit family near Versailles.

Last summer I followed the Meuse river down through Lorraine, all very quiet and agricultural. However this area was on the front line in WW1 and if you are interested in such, then the Douaumont Ossuary and other sites close to Verdun are recommended.

We were there for Christmas and loved it. We did a tour starting at the bottom, worked up to Strasbourg for Christmas itself then came back to western France via Nancy. Nancy is beautiful, there is an aire right near the old centre as well.

Started at Eguisheim (stayed at a wine merchants for free complete with EHU, just on the edge of the village), then
Kayserberg, very pretty and large aire on edge of village
Ribeauvillé/Riquewihr for the day (latter v pretty, though a bit touristy)
Turckheim small but pretty, stayed at municipal campsite just a short walk from town centre
Obernai (overnighted at ACSI campsite but didn't make it into town but supposed to be nice)
Strasbourg (campsite near tram stop to town centre, v pretty)
Colmar we have been to before and is stunning as well, but quite a large town overall so didn't venture in again

The area was stunning at Christmas with all the decs and lights but apparently is stunning in the summer as well with all the flowers, vineyards and hot weather. We will definitely go back in the summer :)

Enjoy!

Yep, lots of pretty villages & vineyards to explore. I would also recommend the ' Route des Cretes' - it was built in WW1 to supply troops & runs along the tops of the Ballons des Vosges in Alsace. There appears to be plenty of Aires around there too which we hope to explore ourselves this June. Hope you have a great time!

A few years back we stayed at the municipal camp site in Ribeville. We cycled through a little vineyard early morning to a little bakers to buy croissants and french bread. During the day we cycled through larger vineyards to visit little villages where we sampled their wines and then wobbled our way back to the site!!! Happy days
