Interesting article from the 'Algarve Daily News'

http://www.algarvedailynews.com/news/3074-record-fines-for-foreign-registered-vehicles

These in particular:
"Foreigners and Portuguese returnees who have a vehicle in the country for more than six months in a year, consecutively or otherwise, and officialy have not imported it, are being stopped and fined an average of €250 a time."

"the authorities now are using a range of electronic surveillance techniques at borders to establish times and dates "

Could cause a few problems if they really do start checking properly.........but it is Portugal, it's taken them 3 years to get a system for the electronic tolls working!!

Almost working if you follow the instructions, not too complicated

http://www.portugaltolls.pt/en/web/portal-de-portagens/home

I got stopped on the way North in April and had to pay for some missed tolls going back 18 months so they do check and they do keep records.

The credit card registration system at some of the border crossings is simple and easy, the only problem(or not) is that to date no deductions have been made for multiple registrations last winter, the reciept was accepted by the authority when we were checked however and no payment was required for the periods when this was valid.
