Just saw this on the news, great site and amazing to see all those bomb sites. 3100 bombs, just utter devastation.

Clearly Mum lied to me as a kid as I looked up our address in Hackney and my bedroom is not listed ;)

Its a shame it has been over laid a modern map in a away.. The Barking and Dagenham area has changed considerably.. The bomb positions and map are from different eras

Yes, of course the position is relevant and unchanging but without local knowledge is somewhat hard to come to terms with

I remember the bomb sites in Barking but as some of the road positions have now changed ( since about early 90's ) the position on the map actually looks wrong .. And the map shows a whole estate where there was nothing bar flood plain back in the day !

As Jaws says local knowledge helps. We used to play on the bomb sites in Homerton in the '50s, friends lived in the prefabs that were put up as short term fixes and still there 40 years later. Looks a bit different now, where are the kids gonna light a good bonfire to sit round for a chinwag and where did all the grasshoppers go we used to catch? Never hear any these days.

I have a Geographers Pictorial Map of London, presumably from the mid-late 1940s, which has a white area on it to the east of Aldersgate Street and north of Cheapside bearing the legend "Approximate area destroyed by enemy action 1940-1941".

Hinckley Council applied
but couldn't even get that right
they gave Coventrys co ordinates
and missed a fantastic opportunity to improve Hinckley.:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
