From what I can see, apart from the short pulse ability the charger is only rated at 6 amps for 12 volts :cautious:

Looks like max is 12 amp " Charging currents. (A): 2 / 6/ 12 "

Very interesting... I'd like to know if it is a connect and forget type charger, and at what rate does is charge - I don't know what the( A) 2/6/12 bit means. I have long had a couple of their 4 amp smart chargers and found them great, but would like to upgrade to a 10 amp connect and forget type, I've seen the Numax for about £60. The Sterling is a lot dearer.

Ah, I see there's been a similar posting.

I understand the charger to be good for charging at 2, 6, or 12 amps.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Just bought one. Good heavy duty bit of kit. Works well. Got it mainly for the direct start facility.

Seems clear to me.

It does not say 12 amps at 12 volts. Another issue is that many battery chargers are rated at the rms ac current before the rectifier which, again, results in an even lower output than what might appear without scrutiny.

Good to hear that you are pleased with the charger. Is there a label/transfer on the back of the charger stating the maximum dc output current for each voltage? If it is 12 amps dc at 12 volts I will certainly jump in my car to buy one.

Thank you very much for finding that, ScotJimland. I did a google search and did not come up with anything.

The manual does say to disconnect all the battery leads from the vehicle before charging. The LB circuit is not connected to the vehicle as such other than through the earth (and split charger, I suppose). That would be OK to charge in situ? And I'm still not clear if it is 12 amps at 12v or at 6v, though rather suspect the latter, in which case I will not buy.

@ScotJimland Thanks for posting the spec sheet. Although the spec is abbridged the label on the front of the charger itself appears (when zoomed in) that the 12 amps is at 12 volts and if this is the case it is good value. I will be heading for Lidl in the morning :)

Since May 05 (Ex Tuggers).
The nine in stock at the P/boro store @ 08.00 this morning, soon became eight. (y)

As expected, it's a heavy and substantial bit of kit, with 16mm copper cables and quality clamps, and of course, it's TUV approved. That'll do for me. (y)

As the 5 x year old battery in our little Pug 206 HDI is becoming sluggish on frosty mornings, I may well get a chance to test out the starting/charging facility on this unit, sooner rather than than later. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Similar quantity in our branch. It's so heavy it's scrap value must be almost the same as purchase price. Just a little heavy to lug around in the camper van but good for use at home.

Just an update, first impressions: A serious bit of kit, not a play thing. Looks very well made, recognised the battery as a deep cycle LB. It seems very powerful on fast charge. To get out of Jump Start if you accidentally get into it (which I did), as it says in the manual, you have to disconnect from the mains. This function is called Start on the fascia, so don't think it means start charging. It charged one goodish battery in no time, and now I've got it on an old LB hopefully to revamp it.

I'd say it's a bargain, but don't take my recommendation as gospel, I'm just a know-nothing camper.
