Makes me wonder what on earth caused it..
perhaps a slow leak over night, then we got in the van and lit a fag or somesuch.
That's what I was thinking, standard van so cylinder not sealed in a locker with a drop vent. In reality no different to going camping in a car with a tent and gas stove, makes you realise how dangerous that was, I'm sure most of us used to do it or conversely how safe Motorhomes are with their drop vents and cylinders sealed from hab area.

Thankfully no one was hurt. I believe he was not using the vehicle as a camper, just transporting the cylinder. It said on the news that they think when he opened the back door, the interior light came on and sparked the gas.

Any ideas what kind of cylinder?
The damage to the van could be done by a small, portable stove type one.

Just says he had loaded up a gas barbecue for a rugby weekend. He was actually trying to turn it off when it exploded so was very lucky to get away with cuts. When it was on local news broadcast, I thought I got a glimpse of the large wheel that might be used on a larger cylinder than those small spaycan sized ones but cannot find a still photo that shows this.
At least that's one Transit the thieves will not be bothering with!

If you look at the pics you will see he was carrying a full size gas barbecue in the back of the van. Designed for outdoor use only so probably no flame failure device. He probably had it connected to the cylinder and it inadvertently got turned on or leaked.
Typical un-informed reporting to describe it as a "Camping Gas" leak.
