Hi, has anyone had trouble with led lights, one of ours went on fire, bit concerned about them now, checked all wiring but it was the bulb!

I've had a couple of bulbs literally burn out resulting in melted plastic and the bulb covered in carbon. Bought cheap off ebay...

One of the guys at shows who has specialised in LED's for the motorhome market explained to me that lots of the cheap LEDs will pop or worse when 13.6v passes through their 12v circuitry. Which is why I should buy his which are rated 12-14v::bigsmile: I've lost loads of bulbs that I've bought off eBay, but none of his has popped yet.

We had similar experiences with cheap LED's catching fire - LED's failing within a unit or just plain giving up after a couple of 100 hours use and I did post the problem on here a couple of years ago with pictures. As Jim says you need one that had a wide voltage range ours are 6 to 30 volts. Having spent a lot of money trying different types I settled with those from JM Goods - Paul the owner and his wife are very knowledgeable about LEDs - only stock the very best - they may cost a copper or two more but I now have all my lights LED's and never a problem with them and they have done many 100's of hours now and still as bright and show no signs of heating or scorching

Ta for reply Jim, we did buy the bulb from one of the shows.

The ones we had that caught fire came from a trader at one of the shows as well - he replaced it but we had no confidence in them as others showed signs of heating up and one or two had failed LED's so scrapped the lot - rather that than risk losing the rig.

I was going to buy some at the NEC, thats put me off :censored:2

Don't let it put you off - the ones we bought from JM Goods have given good trouble free service for a couple of years now. Just make sure they are good quality with a wide voltage range

Exactly correct on the voltage problem. The unregulated ones do burn out rapidly. I however choose a different route. I installed a 12V regulator into my lighting circuit and all my lights now work from a garanteed 12V no matter if the battery is low or on full 14.5V charge. I have not had a single led fail since then. The cheapies I use used to last around 3 months in the main area of the van and up to 6 months in the bathroom.

On the ones that are not mounted in a proper fitting I attach them to a metal strip which dissipates heat as well.

This is the regulator I used. I also have one in a box for my TV/Monitor for when I get it.

I would fit one of these in any motorhome I get in future.

Excellent idea, I think I'll buy one of those:thumb:
