One for Pappajohn

Are some lead acid batteries sealed for life and never requiring distilled water putting in?

Just looked at one of my leisure batteries and there seems no way in to it, the other seems to have the normal plugs in but not as handy to get at until I empty the garage out------Thanks

Yes! They are sealed lead acid batteries! Designed for the modern motorist who doesn't top things up or check levels!
The disadvantage is you can't fast charge them like an open (top-uppable) lead acid battery!::bigsmile:

yep...sealed for life have a special vent which condenses water/acid vapour (gassing) back into the cells.

im surprised a leisure battery is sealed for life....probably just an engine battery sold as a leisure battery.

In theory.

Give me one I can top up any day.

You get loads of information from looking into a cell. If it's low a lot then your charger could be *******ed.

Unless its a gel battery then it's a whole new can of worms.
But then again Alan would have said it was gel not lead acid :Doh:

if it is gel it will be buggered in no time charging on a flooded cell charger

gel and lead/acid have different charge regimes.

I have VRLA batteries (AGM) and they can be fast charged. They have a mechanism inside which combines hydrogen and oxygen back to water :thumb:

Give me an old school lead acid battery any day. Just by taking the tops off you can determine everything that is going on from overcharging to a cell down. There is only one way to check if a battery is any good and that is with a hydrometer. If you cant put a hydrometer in it how can you tell if its goosed ?.
