According to TomTom Support you can not add third party POIs to the Go 6000.
The definitely DONT have the facility to add POIs on the 6000s
I have bought one of the Go6000 and it is OK but I have had to buy a Garmin to get the facility to get the Wildcamper Database POIs on to it which is why I bought a GPS in the first place and I wanted a big screen one, Big mistake. cost me £160 only to have to pay out again The GO series is more a matter of NO GO Series.

My first sat nav was a Tom Tom Go 300 (bought for me as a Christmas preseet in 2005). It was fine as a device but the mapping was a major disappointment. Some major road changes took years for them to deal with (e.g. the A1 rerouting round Ferrybridge, completed before the unit was bought, took a couple of years to get right) and each map update was expensive. As a result we decided to buy a Garmin instead and bought the lifetime maps update to go with it. We also went for a model with the traffic assist option (Nuvi 1300T) but, to be frank, it was a waste of time and not worth the extra. The reports on BBC Radio 2, combined with local radio reports, are far more useful.

One thing we didn't like about the Garmin was that it didn't show PoIs on the route (useful for low bridges for example). We had a look round in June 2013 and found that TomTom seemed to have improved their mapping and to have brought out a better traffic service. We found a Go Live 820 at a very good price (basically end of range sell off) with lifetime map updates. The unit works well but, like all sat nav devices, if you ask it to plot the fastest route it may give you a less than obvious one if it is only seconds faster. It also had live traffic free for a year but wasn't worth renewing the subscription.

I prefer the NozaTec 7 inch Chinese truck cheapie for the van but only because of the vehicle dimension facility.

Our younger son has the Garmin now and is happy with it. Basically they are all much of a muchness (if you get a free lifetime map update) with the differences being in the information displayed.

Make sure the one you buy is not JUST UK and ROI. I looked at the bargain prices one that I wanted but it was only for sale at the low price with those on I shopped around and found euro 45 for £10.00 more, Halfords wanted £45 more I got mine coming from Amazon. It is a six inch screen Nuvi 66LM euro 45

You have to watch those digital traffic services these days. Some of them (possibly all by now) rely on a link to your phone so you can rack up data charges. I would be more tempted by a cheaper one with lifetime map updates only.

I'm with you 100% in saying "a sat nav you can't add third party pois is useless".

It depends if one wants Euro maps or not :) As we stay in the UK, paying extra for Euro maps isn't worth it :)

Last trip I used Maps.me as a sat nav worked fine, no annoying voice prompts, it has it's limits but installing or adding POIs is not one of them and mapping is better than any stand alone unit

thanks.. but I have Co Pilot on my phone.. that is a very good .. but I want a stand alone sat nav.. my Galaxy 3 overheats when it's used for long periods as a sat nav.. plus I find it fiddle to use..

Thats maybe why the old ones were so much faster to update, and at slower internet speeds, than the new ones.

My last map update took 5 hours at 4.5mb download speed.
I just updated my TT caravan and motorhome version, go 1005 i think. Why they have to completely replace the software and not just update i dont know, 3792mb took 6hrs. I tried to load some lpg sites but no joy.

Perhaps the older ones are better, I have a couple of them in the van, they come up for around £30 and will run off the SD card if you like, in fact I' only used the internal memory for a very short time, the newer ones as you know are not a patch on the older ones, I'm not too concerned about maps being out of date, the chances of it being a serious problem are very low, mainly new industrial estates, or new bypasses, I just got fed up of the poor quality screens and maps

Depends how many are their own - and how many are user submissions that they don't check the copyright of before publishing as their own :)

If they've published your lists, they've more money than you, go get some of it.

I wasn't well pleased when my new TomTom Go 500 or 5000 wouldn't take third party POIs, BUT the live search facility is pretty comprehensive and will bring up some (if not all) aires. The other option is to gradually build up your 'My Places' database or export your most used locations as Favourites from an earlier model.

I look forward to a firmware update if indeed that's on the cards.

The online updates take forever, but the live traffic jam avoidance feature on these models is bloody good. My missus uses ours for travelling to business appointments and she swears by it, instead of at it.

Oh yes, by the way DO NOT BUY DIRECT FROM HALFORDS. Go for click and collect on their website and see what discounts/cash back offers you can get - we saved a huge amount on the shop price.

Correspondence with TomTom today. Probably won't do much good.
Question to TomTom
Hello,
I've had my Go Live 820 for a couple of years now so am thinking of changing it.
One of my requirements is to be able to add my own sets (which I have created) of (several hundred) specialist POIs but I have been told that TomTom models no longer allow device owners to do that.
Is that the case or are there still some current TomTom models which do allow the addition of sets of user POIs?
Reply from TomTom
Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support Team. My name is Parimal and I am always happy to assist you.
As I understand you wish to purchase a new device on which you can add POI which are created by you.
I would like to inform you that, your GO LIVE 820 device is 3rd generation device on which you can add 3rd party POI's. However, TomTom has come up with the 4th generation devices on which POI's cannot be added.
I would also like to inform you that, our concern department is working on it and there plans are to come up with a cloud concept in which you can add your location to the map by MyDrive and they will be easily accessible through your device. Maybe your issue will get resolve with the cloud technology. I am not sure how long will it take but hopefully it will launch soon.
If you wish to purchase our new 4th generation TomTom device then I can offer you 25% discount. Please click on the below link to know more about our new devices :
TomTom new products
We also have Camper and Caravan device on the TomTom webshop and this device is 3rd generation device on which you can add your POI. POI file should be of .OV2 format.
Please revert back to me with your contact number so that I can arrange a callback from sales team. Looking forward to hear form you.
With Kind Regards
Parimal R.

My response
Dear Parimal,
Thank you for your prompt reply.
Unfortunately the content means that, unless TomTom reverts to its previous policy of selling devices to which 3rd party POI's can be added, I, like most of my friends, will not be purchasing TomTom devices in future.
Using a "cloud concept" which (it appears from your description) allows addition only of POI's one at a time comes nowhere close to my requirement to add sets of hundreds of POI's which I can do on my GO LIVE 820 device and on devices from other manufacturers. Even if the "cloud concept" were to allow addition of sets of POI's it would be totally impractical for sets containing more than half a dozen entries (quite apart from the security risks of exposing copyright datasets to potential insecurity).
The Camper and Caravan device also fails to meet my requirements as it is far too excessively over-priced.
I am afraid the only way forward for me (and, as mentioned, most of my friends) is to purchase devices from other manufacturers until TomTom acknowledges its error and reverts to selling usable devices.

My Galaxy Note 3 gets very hot when running Co-Pilot. Bought a Galaxy Tab 3, and it runs fine. Very strange.
