For a few Euros you get a riverside view of the ships and cruise boats, quiet at night, safe and secure, restaurant and bar 50 metres, Vet who charges less than most Vets in France, two boulangeries within 100 metres, walks along the riverside in both directions for miles - WTF more do you want for your money?

:france: :france: :france: :france:
While totally agreeing with what you say, do you think that this sort of thing is the small end of the wedge, once they get all Aires barriered is the price going to start rising till they get to campsite prices, will these little businesses be so happy then when at least all the French mhs will be giving them a miss?

The problem with the 'old' system of someone collecting the money, usually around 7 in the evening, a lot of MH turn up after that time and leave early in the morning without paying.

And that can upset those who have paid but also the Aire owners lose income which, if everyone was honest, would be higher and fairer all round.

There are many free Aires throughout France and that situation will probably continue for many years so any Aire that increases the price considerably will eventually lose its customers to the free or cheaper sites.

The local economy in Mailleraye must benefit quite considerably from the MH visitors and they would be silly to bite the hand that quite literally feeds them.

€6 is an absolute bargain for what you get as @KeithChesterfield pointed out.
When we were there a couple of weeks ago the borne was switched off and had hazard tape wound round it. Perhaps it is going to be changed.
The thought occurred to me that the price may well increase but with water included.
It is a very popular spot and they could easily get away with higher charges and still be full up for much of the year.

Richard.

@Clarky - we were there in January on the day the bourne was turned off. I think we were probably the last people to get a fill of water.
It was freezing cold and the push button for the cassette rinse had failed and water was spraying water everywhere - which had then frozen on the ground. Treacherous! Hopefully they'll fix the plumbing and the bourne will be back in service soon.

We stayed last summer thanks to @FIDGET list of Aires no one came to collect money and no sign of a barrier. But we would be happy to pay for the views of the huge barges moving on the river and proximity to the little town . We will be back!

I expect the little old man who collected the money before will be able to retire now.[/QUOTE]

When we were there last September a young lad came around to collect the money, so maybe the old chap has retired.

We tried to go there three days ago. There was no-one on the aire but we think this was because of the heavy rain of late which has made grass aires risky for getting stuck. Before that we were at Moulins and saw a Carthago get completely stuck on the wet muddy grass. When we saw that Mailleraye was empty we just drove away rather than investigating - wish we'd had a proper look now.

There is a hard standing area at the far end next to the sewage works.
Sounds awful but we've never been aware of any nasty nifs, just a bit of 'whooshing' from the pumps. Also, the area close to the high wall at the back in pretty solid and stoney.
Just don't be tempted to to go on the grass between the road and river after wet weather or in winter.

not long enough
the pitches on the river side look too risky for me in winter, but along the wall on the left is good hard standing, we always stay as close to town as possible to avoid the sewage works (noise and smell) although neither are really bad

we did have a British MH park opposite us on the grass in Feb this year, there is a small area opposite the chapel car park that is quite firm

We have stopped there several times over the years and since it became a paid for aire we have seen the Marie investing at least some of the money back to the aire. We find it reasonable value for money but do wonder if it will go the same way as Dieppe ie price goes up.

I now have my answer, yes the barrier is in operation, €5 +€0.50 per person tax so €6 per night.(wooden post at the side of barrier)The borne still has free WC flush water, Jeton required for drinking water(I wouldn't be surprised if some French would use the free water for filling van)
At the moment 4 English, me included and 3 French vans.
So vet on Monday and Montreuill Tuesday night and tunnel on Wednesday (n)

I thought the vet was a fixed price €15. Has it changed? We've only ever paid €15 for two dogs but we supply our own tablets and (attempt to) administer them. Mind you €22.50 is still cheap for France.

Malcolm

ps It may be easier to get a space if all those that think €6 is extortionate avid it now.

No still €15 if you have your own or rather dogs tablet.

I pay €30 in Calais for Staffie, Mailleraye is €15 consultation then €7.50 per tablet so due to his weight 2 tablets required, therefore total of €30.
