We have just returned from the most wonderful 5 weeks in Shetland and what a truly magnificent experience it turned out to be. It's a wild camping paradise as there is virtually nowhere that you cannot stop for the night or several days. So much to see and do, the most friendly and welcoming folk you could wish for and not a sign anywhere saying ' No overnight camping'.

We tried to maintain a blog during our travels, please by all means take a look. Anyone thinking about a trip up north please feel free to ask away.

The basics:

Water - available a plenty at harbours and marinas which are located throughout the islands
Toilets - lots of public loo's that you can also use to empty black waste
Wifi - available at all the leisure centres and inter island ferry terminals
gas - NO autogas anywhere and calor is only available at Lerwick

I would highly recommend or even say it's essential to get a good set of landranger or even better Explorer Ordnance Survey maps. They will help avoid making the wrong turn and help with planning and locating toilets, harbours etc

Sadly, Shetland Islands Council have stopped maintaining many of the Public Toilets to save money! Shetlanders are well aware that this is a bad move and have taken it upon themselves to maintain many of these at no cost for the benefit of visitors! Please be mindful of this wonderful gesture by Shetland folk.

Delighted to see this post. We recently got back from a wonderful trip to the western isles, and wondered about Shetland but wondered whether there was enough to see and do to warrant the ferry cost to get there with the van - clearly from this post there is!

Perhaps we'll go to Shetland another year!
