We're on the coast at an aire at Veulettes sur Mer. On the hillside is an old German lookout post. We walked up there. There are many boards explaining all about the use during WW2. A few of the details that I can remember are that it was used for training. It was also manned by multiple battalions who passed through. The Germans dammed the river to flood the flat valley to prevent anyone landing there.

For anyone interested in this sort of thing the information on the boards is very informative.

One of the information boards. Unfortunately the colours of the others made photos difficult.

I like the idea of a pill box type thing overlooking an aire. A few bursts of machine gun fire should thin out the French motorhomes. :)

Great idea....just going to show your post to our French motorhoming neighbour...just to test their sense of humour...or not.

From the fortifications we wandered a little further. We passed an interesting? feature on our left.. Central Electrique!

We then, almost at Paluel, were diverted by what we thought was park/botanical garden. We took photos and Martin had a swivel on a chair, then we realised it was probably a private area (still not sure).

But no-one challenged us!

We're probably now on our last aire before we catch the ferry on Monday. We're at St. Aubin sur Mer. A large aire but in a very quiet place. Next to the small fishing boats and local stalls selling fish and mussels. We already had today's lunch but tomorrow we'll get dome mussels to cook.

We had a short walk, which didn't go as planned, but never mind.

Tractors bringing in the small fishing boats.

And finally, our lunch, smoked salmon salad with boiled potatoes.

Later we're going to venture onto the beach to see why so many people are heading down there with big nets on poles!

Had our first bike ride together since the day of the accident. Rode about 34km. Called in at the touristy village of Veules les Roses. It seems that the free aire is no longer, at least in August. There was a height barrier where we thought the parking was! Maybe out of high season they open up the barrier.

Anyway, this is the.last night of the first part of our trip. We'll be in the UK for a few weeks before taking a ferry to Holland, Germany, France again.

Is there any interest in a continuing thread???

OK I'll continue. Just had the feeling that France was the more popular country to report on for most people.

In the UK we'll be mainly in north Notts and the Peak District and using CL/CS locations and holiday meets. We only have a few weeks there before we get the ferry from Harwich.

There most certainly is.(y)
We have been trying to sort out our house in France now we are planning on moving there for good, plus summer visitors, so I am enjoying threads like this even more than usual. Travelling virtually is a good second choice.
Your postings have been great. Keep up the good work.:)

It's nice to get feedback and to know I'm not talking to myself!

Used to write a blog and don't think it was read by many people so recently stopped and had my first comment!!! By a FUNster no less.

Must admit we've been really impressed by the part of France we've seen this time. Not our usual area to visit but will definitely return.

The trouble with blogs is, for me, remembering to look at them. If it's done as a thread on here you just mark as watched and you don't miss a posting. I know I could mark blogs to follow but then I am giving to sources I don't know my email address.

The other benefit is you can look back when time allows and mark maps or note places, restos, aires etc., in a notebook.

In my limited experience blogs tend to generate very little interest. I built my own a few years ago and it was an interesting diversion but soon realised I was talking to myself. I fear many on here who have their own blog experience something similar, other than perhaps a few loyal followers and family of course. I soon learned the best way to get useful feedback was to write up the trip on here as it unfolded. In a couple of cases I've subsequently taken the individual posts and then turned them into one continuous narrative in the blog section here. This works well as a record of the trip but it does take a lot of effort to do. :)

Agree about the blogs.

@DBK your threads are always interesting. I'm not so good at the info side, but do enjoy taking photos to post.

We're now on the ferry waiting to sail. Must say quite impressed with it so far. I like the wooden floors instead of grubby carpets! DFDS sailing from Dieppe to Newhaven.
